Hi Guys

Just wondering, does anyone know why

TomTom

Don't want you to have more than one unit. I have 2 730 & 540 and have to set up 2 different accounts to use them with Home.
Whats wrong with owning more than one TomTom

Don't allow you to change your unit more than once every 6 months.

I had 3 in under 6 months, 520 died and was replaced with a 730T, then i got a 540T, again the only way round it it different acounts with different addresses.

Just use a different e-mail - it saves a lot of trouble (and whinging!) Smile

My Internet service provider allows me to have an unlimited number of email addresses by using a system that allows "anything" to used before the "@" followed by my "account name" then the ISP details for example:-

tomtom520@accountname.isp.com where account name is my account and isp represents the name of my provider.

So you could have an account for a 500, 510,520, 530, 540 and so on and so on I dont know how commom this maybe in the email world?

The point is very well made and I argued strongly with TT that I have only one body, only one house, only one PC and only one email address. I lost that argument a long time ago.

My ISP allows me up to 15, but I need at least one sensible one, so I used GO720@, changing that as appropriate for whichever incarnation of whichever device I was at. Which was fine, because as they all failed one after the other, I eventually got up to GO7207. But I only reached ONE01, 7301, 9201 and TTN601. I still have three devices and I've cracked the email address problem. But it's a real pain when one fails or is replaced, I have to delete the old address and set up a new one. Fortunately I'm far too wise to purchase any of TT's services, so I don't lose (until the 920 goes out, because I've paid for the 12 months map update on that one).

The reason why... is that they need some way of managing the different paid-for services and you want to set up on each device and the map purchases and subscriptions.
The way they decided to do it was via an email account name. Maybe they could have done it another way, maybe no, I don't know the technicalities.
But there's no question of only wanting you to own one device or not change it, you just need a couple of different e-mail addresses.
You wouldn't use the same PIN number for all your debit/credit cards would you?

Each device has two unique ids, a device ID and a serial number. These could be used to identify the 'account' rather than the email address assigned.

In fact, the device ID is what links the services for sale to the device and also is recognised by Tomtom home so that it gives you a message if the device connected is not associated with an email account.

So in theory, the device ID is the unique pin that is read by the computer and a single email could have more than one device associated.

So why not allow it? I can think of a few reasons

- Encouraging business customers to buy Work and other device management so that all the company gps systems cant be managed from a single email address
- Avoiding user confusion. If you have two of the same model and you want to identify which is which.
- Perhaps in the future, Home will download without the device connected thus the email and password become the identifier to make sure the correct subscriptions and license are downloaded for each device
- A single email address per device makes it easier to run tomtom buddies as you can be individually identified
