Please forgive me if this has been asked before, but does the free map upgrade period start when you buy your TomTom (as you suggest), or when you first register it?

According to the TomTom web site, "if a newer map is available within 30 days from when you start using your device, you are entitled to one free map download".

I recently bought a 720 and have delayed registering it until I hear that a new update has been released. Am I risking losing out on the upgrade if I wait too long?

If your free map update goes wrong you have to contact TomTom Support, the first thing they will ask for is a copy of the till receipt, if more than 30 days have elapsed they will not offer you any support and you won't get your free map.
How long have you had the device as I doubt there will be new maps for at least a few more weeks as they get released approx. every 3 months - Mike

Thanks for the quick reply, Mike.

I bought my TomTom online so technically don't have till receipt. Although I received my TonTom a few days after ordering it (about ten days ago), what happens if there is a delay in despatching your order. Does the upgrade period still start when you place the order or when you receive it? If so, it is misleading for TomTom to say on their Web site that the upgrade period starts "when you start using your device".

Anyway, to be on the safe side, I'll upgrade within 28 days of the purchase date.

Thanks Mike and everyone for all you help. I feel much more certain about a number of things now and you will have stopped me from the making the mistake of trying to get maps before upgrading to v8.30. I also have read advice elsewhere on the site about putting an upgrade on SD card so it easy to go back to the old version.

A few (hopefully) final questions:

1) When was the last map update and how reliable is the update every 3 months rule. In other words, since I bought my TomTom on 11th Jan, how much chance is there of a new map appearing within 30 days (ie by 10th February)?

2) I get the impression that the next new map might be a significant improvement because it is the first one that will take advantage of the various mapshare updates? Am I right that this is a good reason to hold on as long as possible in the hope of a new one coming out before I use the LMG?

3) Am I right I should be able to get updates for both the Western Europe and North America maps included with my device or will I have to choose? Is there a likelihood I might need to contact TomTom support to get both maps upgraded?

4) Do I have to register via TomTom Home to get v8.30? Is there any other way to get the upgrade if I feel the need to avoid registering (I could then apply it to SD card for testing).

I get the impression that there are two approaches to using the LMG that people could choose from:

1) Register and download the latest map within 30 days of the date on the receipt, and then if something goes wrong, TomTom support will sort it out.

2) Wait (possibly longer than 30 days) and then register when a new map update comes out. The automated facility should make the new map available, hence you get a bang up to date map. However, this runs the risk that if something goes wrong, TomTom support will refuse to help because its more than 30 days after the purchase date - so you might end up loosing the chance to get any new maps at all (unless you pay).

If that is so, then I wonder if it might be possible to do something like this:

1. If a new map comes out withiin 28 days, then regsiter and download it. No need to take any chances. If no new map comes out, register after 28 days in any case and then:-

2. In some way check that the map guarantee facility is working (short of actually downloading a map)
3. If its not working then contact support and take it from there
4. If it is working, then wait up to a further 29 days to see if a new map comes out and is offered to you through the LMG. When the new map comes out, or at the end of 29 days, download whatever is the latest map offered at that time.

... So, is it possible to check the map guarantee facility is working at (2). For example, are the only failures that are likely to require TomTom support ones where the latest maps do not appear to be available for download at all?

... and, if the latest maps are available for download at (2), it is likely that they wiill successfully download at a later date (within 30 days) and that the newer maps will also appear in the LMG list if they come out within 30 days?

... if you successfully download a map (whatever version) via the LMG, but the downloaded map has a fault or is corrupted, are TomTom likely to fix that fault or could they refuse to do so because its more than 30 days after the date on the receipt?

Don't worry, I wouldn't blame anyone if I follow their opinion and then lose out - its my risk!

The 815 map was first reported on the forum 11/11/08, there is no way of knowing the date TT will release another map, it is logic that dictated 4 map updates in a 12 month period = a release every 3 months.

I am wondering how much of the map share data they will embed into the map, I also hope they have a more stringent verification process than the one used for MapShare in normal use. We have seen major roads blocked on more than one occasion.

If you got an 9xx device then it is preloaded with both map sets and yes you should be able to update both maps using LMG. If this fails (quite often reported in the forum that only one map has updated) then you will have to contact TomTom. In case you do need the contact number its 0845 161 0009

You could do a manual download and install of the Navcore 8,300 but unless you are going to use the v815 mapping on the device I wouldn't do this.

1/ It offers no benefit at all unless running v815 mapping
2/ Disables the FM Tx for Nav voice
3/ Stammering TTS voices on some devices

You have a two simple choices:
1/ Update within the 30 days without any issues at all and you are still covered by TomTom should it fail to work.

2/ Wait until the next map is released then try using LMG even if this is outside the 30 day window, if it fails you will get nothing.

My personal choice looking at the dates in your last post I would wait until Monday 09/02/09 and see if it works, this way you will be inside your 30 days and are leaving it as late as possible, if any newer maps are available by then treat it as an added bonus.

Also consider that when a new map is released the servers get a hammering and generally we see an increase in the number of people posting that their map download has crashed, this might not be too helpful if you only have one day remaining of your LMG - There is no way I know of to test your LMG other than to use it - Mike

My understanding is that the 30 days start from when you first use your device rather than when you register it. On the x40 range that will be when you first turn it on as it will automatically communicate with the TT servers through its internal SIM, even if you do not enter you account details. On previous devices I assume TT will log the device as first used when it connects via Home or uses GPRS for traffic.

The LMG is logged against the device code and support can look the details of when you first used it and when the LMG was used when you discuss it with them. I downloaded a map as soon as I got the 530 and less than two weeks later the 8.15 maps were released and I could not use the LMG again on these. I only had to pay about £7 to upgrade again as the map I had was considered one quarter old.

On three month estimates the next map would come out mid February but TT currently have a map sale that ends on 19th January, so maybe they will come out shortly after then.

What you say seems to tie in with the information on the TomTom web site.

In my case (with a 720) I am not using a GPRS connection, so the starting point must be determined either when when connecting to Home for the first time, or when using the satnav for the first time. If the latter is true, it could be grabbing and storing the time and date information from the GPS signal when you go through the initial set-up procedure, couldn't it? This seems like a fairer way to operate the map upgrade scheme than to base it on the date of purchase.

Certainly for pre-x40 models, the clock starts running the first time you use Home to connect to TT's servers
Maybe the x40's can do it via the SIM card, but I've never seen it mentioned anywhere.

TomTom support recorded my 940 first use date as the first date I used it and I did not connect via Home until a few days later to get the 8.15 maps due to problems I had with the first 940 and its live services.
