Point data - one measurement at specific location?

Hello,

I"m a student (from Belgium) and in the month of August/September I will start with my 'Thesis' for my studies. I will do some measurements on temperature (soil, air) and humidity with specialised hardware in a forest. I am a big fan of Geostatistical and GIS analyses and I would like to couple the data to GPS coordinates. So this is my basic problem...
I have been looking around for a simple GPS data logger, but they all seem to record simultaneous data? What I need is a logger that only records a point (X,Y coordinates) at the places of a measurement. Does this type of logger system exist? Or do I have to get a "regular" logging system and put the logging interval high enough and always put the logger ON and OFF?

Most GPS units have a 'mark' function where you press a button and it records the position along with the date and time as a 'waypoint'. Something like a Garmin Geko 301 is small and has a PC interface for uploading.

Thx a lot for the information. It is in fact the thing that I'm looking for! Do you guys have an idea if these systems will work well under the canopy of a forest?

If it's a thick canopy then you may well have problems. Look for a GPS with a SirfIII chip (so not a Geko) and think of an external aerial too.
