Whilst the speech files were never on my Go940, I have found them all in the 8.15 LMG map update in the downloads folder. 53 different speech files and 313MB.

There seems to be one per state so would they all need to be installed (assuming you were visiting every state) or just one and it speaks New York English as opposed to Nevada English?

I'm not surprised you found them, MrT. In it's infinite 'wisdom' ( Rolling Eyes ), TT determines during installation (and it detects a shortage of space) what files it will not install in order to squeeze both maps (in this case, NA) into the same memory location. So, it leaves out the speech files.

Unfortunately, yes, you'd need to install every speech file if you were going to visit every state (and don't forget cspeech_CAN.dat if you ever plan to visit the 'Great White North' Cool )

Oddly enough my Go940 has 397MB free memory so they would have installed.

Also I have just noticed that Home has installed the European Speed Cameras in my America directory. Very odd.

Then again Home installs all the European Cameras in my wifes 530 UK map.

I'm sure you're not giving us a load of BS David, but this leaves me speechless!! Does this mean that if I were to delete the cspeech_FRA.dat file from my Europe map folder, I'd be without instruction across the other side of the English Channel? Uh oh, the more I think about it, the more I think that would be the case - the cspeech Dat files contain the instructions for that part of the map - they seem roughly related in size to the size of the country in question.

You will only find the ASR (Advanced Speech Recongnition) doesn't work if these files are missing, the Text To Speech system will be fine without these files.
If you don't use the ASR capability take the files off the device and save some space, the units don't like my accent so I have endless "fun" trying to get this to work - in the end I removed the files to free up some space and only currently have the UK data installed to the device - Mike

For whatever reason, we in NA tend to refer to the functionality as Voice Recognition.

In any event, (to DennisN) no, it's not BS. If you wanted to use VR in the state of Texas, you would need to make sure the cspeech_TX.dat file is in the NA map folder; otherwise, if for example you stated the city as 'Houston', the unit would not understand what you were saying. And, because of its size (the state), the speech file is 42 megs in size, just by itself!
