I have a Casio EM500.....do I need to install any drivers to use the Haicom 204s GPS reciever?

There are absolutely no instructions saying this with the unit but I read elsewhere that Toshiba PPCs need drivers.

special drivers are only required for PocketPCs that do not have a native serial interface (they need to emulate it via USB). Yours should work out of the box

Back to square 1 then.

Been sent a replacement GPS antennae and still doesn't work so I'll have to try for a replacement connection lead now.

I really am out of ideas to get this thing working....why can't I just pay my money and get a product that works.

sorry for being blunt but you may want to think about getting a real PocketPC... The Casio may not cut it... have you actually confirmed that it works with other serial peripherals?

Well it may be blunt but also uncalled for. I have had the EM500 for a couple of years and has done its job with out any problems. So why on earth would I decide to buy a "real" PPC before buying satnav just incase it doesn't work.

And no....I don't have any other serial devices to check it with but the physical port works fine when USB syncing with desktop.

Embarassed Apologies... It's just pretty rare these days to see a MIPS CPU.

You say USB syncing. Do you by any chance have a serial sync cradle that you could try? Maybe something's wrong with your serial port, or something's blocking it (like for example the IR receiver).

EM500 has a serial port so it should work without any driver if you have the correct cable.
You should also consider whether you have configured the software correctly?

EM500 has only 16MB so it is hard push to run Tom Tom 1. But it may be OK for other less demanding software.

Thanks for the advice guys.....I have a feeling that it is a software/system problem regarding the serial port. Maybe it is just asking too much of the EM500. I have tried a new GPS mouse to no avail....

I have had a play with the route demos of TT3 and am very impressed (except for asking me to turn left at a no left turn junction)

Any suggestions how to verify the functionality of the serial port without a serial device to test it? Doing a hard reset didn't work.

I don't want to have to fork out another few hundred quid just to use something I only bought as a toy!!! But I also don't want to have wasted nearly 200 quid on tt3 and a GPS mouse etc!!

What do you mean you tried a new serial mouse?
How do you connect them?
Though EM500 has a serial port you must have the right cable to connect to the mouse GPS which must come from the mouse GPS manufacturer.
It will not work with just any cable you can connect physically.

I said.....I tried a new GPS mouse not serial mouse.

I connect them using the proprietry "Y" cable which powers the Mouse and the PDA.(this came in a bundle and was labelled Casio EM500)

The new mouse didn't make the system work.

BUT yesterday morning I recieved a new Y cable and the system worked immediately.

So..in summary from the original order of TT3, Y cable and GPS mouse. I have recieved new items of each.

Of course it had to be the last thing that was ACTUALLY at fault.

So although I have had very bad luck with this purchasing experience I feel I must recommend Handtec.co.uk

Their support was excellent...each replacement item dispatched very promptly without argument.

In our world we call a serial GPS receiver a serial mouse. Nobody has yet tried to connect a serial computer mouse to a PDA.... (Not that I am instigating things here Rolling Eyes )

Well where was the ambiguity in the first place then?

Unless that guy is a total retard he must have known what I meant.
