I travel that waya alot and yes a load of people must have just noticed them and aare driving up to them braking hard down to 50? and then speding up again, so yes I thnk there will be even more crashs soon due to this so i dont know why thay didnt just start them at 50 and be done with it.....

The only blackspot on this otherwise straight dual carriage way is the stretch westbound from the A129 Rayleigh Weir to the A130 interchange.That is because of an Esso? garage on a sharp right-left downhill section which leaves you blind to anyone entering or leaving the garage.A slip road for the garage might have been cheaper,but not so financially lucrative!

Seriously though, at least you can see the things, - in daylight at least.

Drove along the eastern end of M62 recently, with a rash of Specs, and yes, just put the cruise on and sit it out.

As for "evening out" traffic speeds, in my part of Lancashire there's hundreds of Micra drivers who proceed along National limit roads at 38-42 mph, causing endless frustration to the "press on" types. Does everyone in Essex drive literally at the posted limit?

To be honest the majority of deaths on our local roads around bristol are motorcyclists who totally ignore all known road laws. The roads are littered with floral tributes to them.

The specs cameras are inneffective against motor cycles, as they have no front number plates, so will do little to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries.

There are many miles of dual carriageway across the country, with traffic trying to join or cross the road, cyclists, tractors etc. They are all very dangerous as most drivers tend to treat them like motorways. This means there are road users travelling at very low speeds mixing with road users travelling at very high speeds. A very dangerous mix. Accidents are just waiting to happen.

Cutting speed is one solution to this situation. Converting the road to motorway is another, but in practice is not practical.

Local authorities are under great pressure to try and reduce the death toll and will grasp the best solution on offer. They need to be seen to be doing something.

Until a better solution is offered we will see more and more technology used to reduce speed.

We have a local motorway junction (M5, J14) where there was never a traffic congestion problem but the local council decided to install traffic lights. 14 posts in total appeared at a cost of 3/4 million. It takes ages to get through as you have to stop several times. The congestion they caused was so bad they now switch them off at peak times and on again at all other times. They are determined to keep them as this is a dangerous junction, as are all similar isolated rural roads in the area. At least this little scheme has stopped them peppering the road with speed cameras and other than the congestion caused its not too bad.

So unless you can come up with a better solution to speed cameras, prepare for the onslaught.

All this interest in the kilometres versus good old english miles makes me think. All speed cameras and especially specs probably calculate your speed in kph but our laws specify mph. I wonder how accurate the conversion is. There are probably many significant figures so the result has to be rounded. I wonder how legal speed cameras are if they work in kph internally.

I don't live that far from Mike and as a local Paramedic anything which reduces both injuries on the road and road death is a good thing in my book. However I don't believe that the Specs camera's are in place for either of those reasons.

If the aim is to reduce caualties over a stretch of A127 then place Specs camera's along that whole section yes. However on closer examination they are placed in pairs between junctions. The only reason for this is to catch as many speeders as possible and create a revenue stream for the department uputting them into place. The only people that this really penalises are the locals who use the A127 as a means to travel around their community.

It won't be long before the presence of the Spec camera's stretches all the way to the M25, just watch.
