|
|
When I try to connect my Go 510 to my PC, I get a message from the PC saying "One of the USB devices connected to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."
I've tried unplugging the USB cable and reconnecting, via the same or other USB ports, plus shutting down and restarting both PC and Tomtom, but nothing seems to fix this.
Does anyone have any ideas? |

Have you tried resetting the TomTom with a pin? - Mike |

Hi Mike, that was a swift reply!
Yes, I tried that, which meant I then had to completely re-configure the 510, as I managed to lose ALL my personalisation!
And, no, it made no difference! |

A reset shouldn't kill any settings what you have possibly done is the restore factory defaults from the menu?
The reset switch is very small adjacent to the electrical connector on the base of the device, either a paperclip or pin is best to depress this.
If you cannot get the device to be recognised by the PC have you got an SD card reader? - if so pop the card out of the 510 and put it in the card reader, does the PC then see the card? - Mike |

OK, just tried the paper-clip reset.
Still not recognised by the PC.
The card can be read OK if I use a card reader, so presumably the problem lies in the Tomtom hardware? |

You could try:
1. Shut down PC
2. Sit tomtom on cradle, when it asks if you want to connect to computer tap "yes"
3. Switch on computer
4. Cross fingers and hope that when the computer boots it will recognise the tomtom. _________________ Paul |

My next suggestion, if you have not already tried, is try connecting to another PC.

I tried pcaouolte's suggestion, and although the PC could see the device, it wasn't able to access it at all. I then restarted the 510, and the same error message appeared.
Interestingly, I found, by accident, that I get the same error if I connect the 510 to the PC without the SD card inserted!
I'll try now on another PC.

It could be the desktop cradle that is at fault or the connector on the device as they are known to have been problematic from time to time - If you can see the card in the card reader you should be able to do most tasks this way?? - Mike |

Aha! Progress! (of a sort!)
My other PC sees the 510, (as a Tomtom 710, apparently!), as a 243 MB drive, so that proves the hardware is OK.
I'll have to dig deep into the bowels of Windows XP, and find where it is saving a corrupt version of the hardware driver for the 510.
This could take some time, but I'll post back here what I find, for "future reference!" |

I agree its looks like a cradle/lead problem. The cradle is not specific to TT, as I sometimes use a third party lead to connect my tomtom _________________ iPhone4 IOS 4.3.3

With the x10 the cradle and lead are very specific to the device as it used an active dock so a normal mini USB lead is useless with these devices - Mike |

Sorted!
I have an HP Officejet Pro K5400 printer attached, via USB, to my PC.
If this is on and connected when the 510 starts, then I get the error.
If it is OFF, then no error!
Must be some kind of resource clash, somehow. (USB was not supposed to have problems like that!)
At least I can use my system now, to get updates, etc.
Many thanks to all who offered help, and to PocketGPSWorld for this forum! |
