Major roads instead of shortest route and minor roads???

Hi All,
Apologies if this has been touched upon before, I have Tomtom2 & a wireless GPS purchased from tomtom, I used this product at the weekend a few times and it worked fine and got me to my planned destination, however on each occasion it took me down some of the smallest back roads and farm roads imaginable where im sure there were more major roads available for my route.

Is it not possible to change settings so the software concentrates on major roads instead of these minor little back roads all of the time??

make sure TomTom is set to "quickest" mode when planning a route (the A->B icon). Also, verify in properties...advanced that the default street speeds are used. If necessary, decrease the speed of the road types you want to avoid.
