I decided to upgrade my Western Europe map yesterday for my TT720. Home said it would give me the instructions to remove the last map after the download was complete and also the email containing the invoice said an email would arrive with full instructions, that never came. Some hours later what do I have.....

Well the original map has disappeared and that was that. Clicking on maps in Home I can see the new map is on my computer ( A Mac by the way) and using add it asks me to delete 445 MB from the device to make space for the map. If I delete everything on the thing I do not seem to have the space to do this, nevermind to plan B.

I have an SD card in and this has the the Eastern Europe map sitting there, but has more than enough room to have the Western Europe version there also, but all attempts to do this via Home appear to be futile, the right device is selected bah bah bah. I do not remember having such problems when I parked the Eastern version on the SD card.

I am guessing I should forget Home and just drop the map file into the SD card somewhere, but I would rather someone with a bit more experience could say yes or no or how. Many thanks in advance, Andy.

First, is the original map actually still on your machine? Check using the Mac equivalent of Windows Explorer (Finder?) NOT Home.

Then BACK IT UP (if you haven't already) by copying the entire map folder to your computer.

Next... when Home starts up, the very first thing you see should be a pop-up window appearing asking you to choose between the internal memory or the SD card as your storage destination for THIS session of Home. Do you not get this?

If you do, choose SD card, then select add 'maps, traffic, voices etc.' and if the map has downloaded successfully it should be amongst the items on "my computer".

Home is needed for the download, because it is during that process that the security certificate is written to lock the map to your unit, but once it is downloaded, I believe you can just extract the contents from the .cab file and install manually.

Okay I can see the map 815 sitting in home and it tells me where it is on my Mac. I have the device open and I can ask to add the map then it asks me to delete files to make some room, so the first problem is there appears to be no room to get this map of this size on to a TT720.

No bother there then I think I will just use my SD card, bags of room and it can sit there with my Eastern Euro map, change device and see the map as on my computer via home and press add. The download screen appears but all that is loaded appears to be some POI I use on my Eastern Euro map and this takes a few seconds and thats it.

Upshot the western map appears not.

As a sort of test, I thought I would put the old map back via home but it seems now to have an archive file problem and the backup I did before this now does not work, home again. Using the switch maps on the TT I see only the Eastern map, I can see in finder a western map. I have email TT with this, but I will back up with finder now.

Which map is it? The Western_Europe map or the Western_and_Central one?

Have you removed the existing map from the 720?

Darren its the Western_Europe map and no I did not remove my original map, that was done during the download at some point. I followed the download to the letter all instructions were obeyed under the pain of death, I am quite careful about this as most TT downloads appear flaky in operation, well they make me sodding nervous anyway....

All I can say is the last time I looked at the screen is had 6 hours to run, that was going up and down, it would have been online for 7 hours at that point and then 30 minutes later it had finished, no instructions at all, original map gone and downloaded map appearing to be on the computer. Trying to use the backup I made before (home) is a no no, get box with a load of text to the reason it failed and trying to reload the original map via home, another box with reasons not to be cheerful

2 weeks later i have to new map on the device, mostly by sitting down and learning a bit about the TomTom folders and files sitting in my Mac. I have had several support emails from TT, the first couple I followed to the letter and my problem became worse, so reading between to lines of the emails from support and looking through this forum along with a bit of new found logic I did manage to get a map onto the device that is working.

To the problem in the first place, still no idea, perhaps the download was missing something, perhaps wireless drop out, but the support solution appears to have resulted in folders all over the place, even suggesting not using Home is a good idea.

I got a very fast internet connection is Denmark last Friday and Home seemed happy, although Home could not see the map, Finder could and when switching maps could see the new map on the device, but all this did when selected was hang the machine for a few minutes, then reboot and freeze in the start up screen.

Looking via Home to the Western Map I saw 5 well, sorry Western Map er things, were it appears 3 er things (files should be there) deleted that folder and started again with better success, a fully working Western map, although in when switching maps the one that freezes the machine still shows although its not in Finder, I might look at that at some point, but happy to be up to date and fully working again. Thanks to the forum I feel I managed to sort my own problem out.
