Hi guys and gals,
I have just bought a 2 month old Garmin Summit HC off Ebay for £100, I thought the HC had an external memory card in it but now I know its the HCx that has that feature - DOH !

So all I have to play with is the 20mb of internal memory.

I have a Garmin Nuvi250 so I don't need road mappings but I have the Summit HC as I enjoy walking and want to explore more of the national parks and use my Summit when I go. The Summit HC has a worldwide basemap but its not that great!

Garmin say on the technical spec write up that I have the ability to add maps to the unit and also that the Summit HC is compatible with Topo maps but I just read the thread on here back from 2005 slating topo and Garmin say the topo maps are compatible with my unit but again this 2005 old thread on here says how it uses 100+mb for the full maps ?

So now i'm confused !

Can I use topo maps with this unit and / or is there better maps out there, I see people recommend fugawi as well ??
Any help is greatly appreciated

If you are from Cardiff and walk in the Brecon Beacons you will require 38MB to load Topo GB for that area [without routing data]!

how much would it use, memory wise then, if I just had Brecon Beacons on there then as I wouldn't need to know my way there from Cardiff as I have a Nuvi250 for that Question Question

The pink maptiles on the screenshot are the Brecon Beacons and it is 38MB!

well I just downloaded the free MApyx Quo V2 map

They do just a tile of a map so for someone who wants just a map area or doesn't have a great amount of memory it seems a better and cheaper way to go.

The tile costs a couple of quid so if its poo its just £3 down the drain Laughing

Quo is actually a decent package, better still if you have a PDA device you can even load the maps to that and take it out on the fells, the free application is a little limited in number of waypoints etc, the professional application (which is still cheap) gives much greater capability - Mike

You cannot load these maps, however upgrading to HCx will allow you to load all TOPO GB or wait for the new Garmin Discoverer.
