The problem here is this "feature" war with other Sat NAv companies. All I want...and my wife in particular...is something that will assist in finding addresses we're not used to or rerouting around major problems in areas we don't know that well....or even do know for that matter.

The 720 I have just ordered fits that bill. I will disable everything bar the basics...but it does give me TTS which cheaper models don't do. The whole routing interface is probably the best on the market and thats enough for me. I wouldn't mind at all if they stopped or removed any future feature addition on my 720. OK, to be fair, I have BT built into my car and I have a Blaupunkt DAB that plays MP3 and has an SD slot as well. Having said all that ALL new cars should be BT enabled by law. But if didn't have them I wouldn't want my routing device trying to be a jack of all trades. Some of these things are just nice to haves but not essential by any stretch of the imagination...BT yes...the rest no. The only useful thing IMO is the TMC and that is always going to be hit and miss anyway.

So I will be trying the 8.3 NAvcore and the 8.15 maps with the V7 voice but I won't use the IQ routing, BT or FM. But then for £130 I don't care Smile

What TT should do is launch the likes of a 940 as a catch all device for all feature changes with new hardware architecture nand have a range of devices with the basics...routing and TTS for me, that can't be upgradeable to the next marketing ploy other than latest maps. It wouldn't surprise me if this is the last feature addition ever issued for the sub x30 ranges. And in my book thats not a bad thing

Having purchased a 540 Live I passed my 720 on to my son having first done him the favour(?) of upgrading to Navcore 8.3 and v815 maps. Of course he drove away, before I was aware of these problems, and Kate stuttered like a good 'un.

He's back this weekend and I have now taken a copy of the Loquendo v7 files from my 540 to install on the 720.

Couple of points which may be obvious to the 'techies' in this community but not to others. The copy of the 540 sourced Loquendo file in its initial version was about 91 Mb. Installing this onto the 720 resulted in total silence! So at that point I opened the folder and deleted everything with the word 'Simon' in it which brought it back down to the 47.8 Mb that others have reported as a result of downloading via the links provided in this forum.

The only thing was that having, by now, several different Loquendo folders on my desktop I had renamed the folder I copied to the 720 to have a suffix i.e Loquendo TTS Kate. The result was that this time I could get voices but not the computer generated voices. However as soon as I renamed the folder back to the original name i.e. 'LoquendoTTS' again Kate started speaking to me and an initial test over a complex route of about 2 miles this afternoon seems to have resolved the issue.

This is with IQ Routing, Bluetooth, PGPS camera database with voices, filling stations and cash machine POIs all active.

Will revert if we have further problems

If you re-name folders and files or even alter the case of the letters the device will not find the folders, for example:

"LoquendoTTS" is fine and works
"loquedotts" will not work (we saw this issue with Home and the 910 units)
"Loquendo TTS" will not work (Note the gap)
"LoquendoTTS Kate" will not work

If your son uses TomTom Home software on his PC it will probably tell him in red that the voice file is the wrong type for his device, just ignore this for now until this whole issue of stuttering voices is resolved. The newer voice files don't cure the problem 100% but they are a significant improvement on standard performance - Mike

Hey guys,

I recently bought the Go 920 T as the x30 and x40 models were out of my budget. I am completely new to tomtom, and thus updated to 8.300, and am currently downloading the latest maps using the guarantee.

I took it out on its first journey after the 8.3 upgrade, prior to downloading the maps. I was using the 'Kate' voice, and on many occasions I had to properly look at the on screen picture to get an idea where I was going, as the voices was garbled.

Now I have read the whole of this thread but am a bit lost. I have a few hours left on the maps download... is there anyway to stop the voices stuttering.

I stupidly didnt backup prior to the 8.3 upgrade, although I have backed up prior to the map downloads..

I bought the 920t and am doing thes upgrades etc as I wanted IQ routes, and advanced lane guidance...

Aghhh!

I can do without IQ routing. If the junction is that complicated I would rather be looking where I'm going than at a GPS which I have no confidence in. If the junction is straight forward I don't need IQ.

You seem to have mixed up IQ routing with ALG - advanced lane guidane.

IQ routing (v2) is supposed to help pick you a route based on how busy the roads are at certain times of day.

I hope you did the backup using Windows Explorer? - if you used Home you will have to move the backup to somewhere else on your PC or the next backup you perform will overwrite the old one, you will then lose your old map.
The old Navcore 8,010 software is easy to replace, the map isn't - Mike

I think scubaalan means "whatever" to the IQ or ALG thing...and I tend to agree with him. On the basis that these have only added distraction for TT from what they should be focusing on...better maps and routing. If I was approaching a tricky junction the last thing I would want to do is have to look at a TT display....."your honour!"

The ideas a good one, as they all are on paper, but in reality they are just extras that will wither and die once the next great thing is thought up. I still think they, the features, are at the bottom of a sloppy upgrade process. It will be interesting how quickly TT come up with a solution for the current one......

All is not lost.

First do a full explorer back up, select all files from the 920 and copy them to your hard drive in a folder suitably named for reference if needed later.

Then download the Loquendo TTS folder supplied earlier in post ( i used the one from Andy Vaughan) as it just has Kate v7 in it.

Then just delete the LoquendoTTS file on the unit and paste in its place the downloaded v7 file.
Hey presto you have v7 Kate and she should sound a whole lot better.

Once you realise the TT is just a small computer it makes a whole lot more sense that you can just copy and delete files just like any other hard drive, well it did for me. Do all this through My Computer and not through Home.

mrfreeze,

Thanks for the post.

There is still 6 hours left on the download of the newest maps, but am I correct in thinking that once they complete I will have:

Navore 8.300, the latest maps, and thus advanced lane guidance/iq routes I.E x30 functionality, fully working on my Go 920?

Thanks

Only fully working when you copy the TTS files as mrfreeze explains.
After that, pretty much yes.
And hopefully all for less cost than a 530!

The 815 map update failed the first time on mine because there wasn't enough space on the internal flash memory. I deleted some of the foreign TTS voices to make more space. If this happens, don't worry because the map is still downloaded to your computer, even if it didn't make it to the device.

Eh, I wasn't making myself completely clear.

By the way, am I the only one that can't get the TTS v7 files to work on a 720 with 8.300 SW? On he device it's not visible at all, and in TT HOME I get a message saying that this Kate voice is not working with my application.
