Quote: | Indeed, I don't even see the 765 in the list of available updates over at Garmin so no option for me to revert to the non-Beta release. |
If the recent debacle with the 7xx series firmware is anything to go by you really might not want to do that. With the recent 4.00 release (which introduced a whole raft of bugs) you couldn't downgrade the firmware to a 3.xx firmware without killing the BlueTooth facility. Your nuvi would then have to go back to Garmin to be fixed. Might be worth speaking to Garmin first. |

Darren,
Is there a review coming soon? I would be interested to see what you think as at the moment the lag you describe would be unacceptable. Has the firmware helped? |

Indeed there will be, I'm awaiting the test results from the new firmware, lag has been improved I'm happy to report. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I am interested in buying a 765 and would appreciate a review of this product. Are the updated maps much different from the current ones. Look forward to the review.
Cheers,binty. |

Well the much vaunted 3D buildings are very sparse, even the 3D block footprints are reserved for large cities only, nothing around my location.
The display at last allows one of the info fields to be changed to the info you want displayed, a feature that was absent on Garmin for far too long.
I still dislike the cradle and horrible TMC antenna arrangement but the interface is very simple and clear and I'm warming to that. However, Garmin, please change the address look up, I don't want to have to select Wales, just to search an address there! Had me confused for a while at first that did! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Probably because it can't believe anyone would go to Wales without being forced to...........I'm joking...honest.
CoPilot was a like that as well it used to drive me mad. Looking at several Sat Navs today in good old John Lewis and all they had was a 760...the Garmins look good to me and the lag issue was concerning me in my search for the "ultimate" sat nav. Otherwise the screen was good, the touch element was fine and as I only use the 2D image this was at least comparable with the TomTom......although the TomTom has the edge for colours.
Is the lag gone....? _________________ TomTom 720

Be aware the 760 is not the same as a 765 and don't share the same firmware / problems. The 760 on the latest firmware only suffers the same amount of lag as any other Sat Nav in my experience - i.e. slight and only when not used in Navigation Mode. |

Paul, do you know if the 765 replace the 760 or is it a separate model that will run alongside? _________________ Darren Griffin |

I did ask them about the 765 but they weren't sure about when they were getting any.
I note that Darren is happy that the lag is now "normal" after firmware upgrade. Interested in considering a Garmin because about 5 years ago a colleague had a Streetpilot in his car and I was very impressed. Of course there is more competition now and I want TTS so the 765 would be interesting for me...or the TT720......or the Navigon 2110Max....oh, decisions decisions...... _________________ TomTom 720

If it were me I'd say Garmin 765 or TomTom 730, you'd be happy with either.
If you can, try and play with both. The 760 is close enough that it'd give you a good indication of the user interface. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Switching from one to the ..which I did....was a small challenge. Both of them had the voices activated and a very quiet, before I arrived, department was soon ringing to the sounds of a Garmin and a TomTom telling me to turn right at the next roundabout etc etc.
Its fair to say that both are excellent and the decsion is more around upgrades, routing and...support. I can't believe Garmin are anything as bad as TomTom. If I was going to buy a Garmin then I would love to see the review but if its, essentially, the same as the 760 then the choice of TT or Garmin is a tough one..... _________________ TomTom 720
