Have you seen Garmin's stock recently?

Data courtesy of Yahoo Finance

TomTom aren't unique here, they're all suffering. TomTom can re-finance, even in this economic climate. It will cost them, lower profits, poorer returns but still a very low risk compared with others in the short term and huige potential gains when we all come through the other side. Garmin will be the same. The losers in this will be the minor players and those struggling for position in the market.

Garmin will always survive. The yacht I sail/race on has four Garmin units and most crew members have their own. Yacht sales are good down here in Poole and elsewhere on The South Coast and most owners want the best GPS for their crew.

Luxury spend is about to take a nose dive! Whilst I agree that the likes of TomTom, Garmin etc are less likely to disappear no-one is truly safe in such a bleak climate.

They all require investors, financing, bank co-operation etc and it only needs a problem with one of them to cause the whole pack of cards to come tumbling down very quickly.

Does this mean that we will soon be seeing a TT-Nuvi ? I hope not.

As a long time fan of Garmin products and their first class customer service I would hate to see them tied up with TT - because the TT bad customer service bug may be catching - - - - !

The biggest differnence, financially, between Garmin and TomTom is that Garmin has no need to refinance anything. As of the last financial report they still had in access of $7Billion US in cash as I remember. Real cash, not just assets. TomTom doesn't have that cushion.

Let's hope they keep it under their mattresses, not in the bank!
