Hello, I have an ageing GO 500 which is still alright actually but as I am driving around a lot more with my job, me and the mrs could really do with one each, so I need to get a new TomTom but have a few questions.

I have been looking at the new TomTom XL as the primary option. I have a bluetooth carkit so don't need any connectivity to my handset and won't be travelling around Europe enough to warrant any European maps. I was quite interested in the TMC pack though but if you're going to spend the cash on the XL TMC version, are there any benefits to spending a bit extra to get a 530T?

So really:
What are the benefits to buying a 530T over a (new) XLT?
Can I update the XL to have any of the features of a 530?
Is it worth buying a 520 and are there any updates available to bring this up to 530 spec (I'm assuming that once I buy and register it, I get the most up to date map available)
If I buy any new tomtom and have the latest map on it, can i copy this map to the SD card in my 500?

Cheers!

Welcome

The ONE XL does not support some of the 530 features - see the table in the fist post of this thread for further details.

A 520 may be updated to v8 Navcore and v8 maps to give you pretty much a 530 - v8 Navcore is a free download and (as far as I'm aware) Latest Map Guarantee (LMG) will give you v8 maps.

With v8 Navcore installed, the 520 will also support MapShare Speed Limit Change, IQ Routing and Advanced Lane Guidance, but this was removed from the table referred to above because v8 Navcore for the x20 range was withdrawn for a while, but has since been reinstated.

The new maps for a 520 or 530 will NOT work on your 500.

Hope that helps

Thanks Andy, yes that's a big help.
I think the best option to go for in that case would be a 520. I was hoping to pickup a 520T relatively inexpensively but they seem to be a bit thin on the ground, so I'll probably go for a 520 and add the TMC receiver at some point in the future.

Cheers
John

The RDS-TMC traffic receiver is available quite cheaply as a separate item.

Depending upon how much travelling you do, HD Traffic may also be of interest, but that will require a monthly subscription.

If you buy a 520, though, you'll be free add the traffic function at a later date.

Hi jonnyguitar
Yes, the 520 will fit your requirements perfectly and its benefits have already been described. Its map covers the UK and Ireland and as you are unlikely to be visiting mainland Europe it will do nicely.
If you shop round you will see that it shouldn’t break the bank.

Cheers guys, nice one.
I went to PC World on the way home as I'd found a Go 520 Traffic pack for £169. In preparation for doing some updating, I've just backed it up, but do I update the map first OR update the software or doesn't it matter?

I really should think about going to bed, but I have a feeling I will be sat here for some time Laughing

Righto - cheers.
I'm using TomTom home on my Mac which has given me a big list of stuff to update with (none of which I've started yet!!). The software version it wants to update to is 7.481 and also a load of speed camera warnings for most of Europe. I take it that I don't need these as my maps are UK and ROI only?

Actually is it possible that because I may have an older map (that I've not yet updated to V8), that the home won't provide Navcore 8 software for the device, because it's not compatible with the map?

Should I update the map first?

v8 maps will only run on v8 software.

Navcore 8 must, therefore, be installed first

It sounds like you'll have to do it in stages - update to 7.481 first, then 7.481 to 8.010 (you can't update directly from 7.221 to 8.010)

Try disconnecting your device, close HOME

Re-connect your device and power up HOME again and see what it offers you after that

Right, from a bit of a search on this site, I've come downloaded a file called "navcore_8.010.9369.gox20.cab". What do I do with this?! Laughing
