TomTom Launch New x40 LIVE SatNav Range at IFA (540/740/940)

Look on the bright side. Tomtom release new maps and software on a regular basis - compare this to Navman, who stick two fingers up at their customers and provide no new software or maps for devices as little as 2 years old.

I loved my old Navman, but the maps had become so out of date - there was no way I would risk the same happening again, so I am now a happy Tomtom customer, fairly safe in the knowledge that I will be able to buy up to date maps in the future. As long as the maps are accurate, I have no desire to buy the 'latest gadget' - I suspect there are still many happy owners of the original Go.

The Live service such as HD Traffic is available in Holland on the x20/ x30 devices by connecting the HD Traffic receiver to the device and paying the subscription charges to use the service.

HD Traffic is not currently available in the UK (although it is scheduled for release, but don't ask when!) So there is no point in TomTom selling an accessory in the UK for a service that isn't there to use.

With your x20 updated to the v810 maps and connected to a HD Traffic receiver will you have the same as the 940? - I very much doubt it, it might be close but TomTom will always offer additional new functionality on the newer devices otherwise no one would purchase them! - Mike

I don't want this to appear as me having a pop at anyone, any machine or any company, I am over the moon with my purchases, I think the piece of hardware combined with the software does the job beautifully it is very consumer friendly if you read the instructions or if you are willing to balls stuff up once in a while (and have backed it all up).

But my problem with the whole Tomtom outlook is that there are too many "new" machines. Gadget gimp that I am I doubt I will upgrade to a "new" machine until it drives the car for me.

What was the release dates for the three pieces of Hardware 920, 930 and now 940? **Holy Cow I've just looked and the 930 was only launched in March according to this forum, that is pretty poor!!!!**

The 920 and 930 are virtually the same machine, but basically the 930 came with a different map with new features, surely if you, as has been done now, sell those maps and new functionality onto the one piece of hardware then more people would purchase your machine, but now if you are in the know, when will you upgrade? What is coming next? When is it coming? Should I wait? Will it still work with what I bought a few months ago?

What connections are on the mount?

I'm assuming one is for power, one is for the accessory port (iPod cable, TMC antenna, etc.), and the last one is and audio out / headphone jack?

Yup there is miniUSB for power and possibly the miniUSB TMC Antenna accessory, the others are iPod/original TMC antenna and audio out.

Good to hear. Now, if I could only find something that will let me mount a TomTom on a Garmin sized mounting ball...

You should also be aware that the connections I refer to are for the 940 mount, lesser models differ.

Yup. I'm aware that they're on the 940's mount.

I wish someone made an adapter with a TomTom sized mounting ball on one side and a socket for a Garmin sized mounting ball on the other side.

You're assuming their is a standard 'TomTom' size of mounting ball! The x10's were the last device to use a mounting ball until the arrival of the x40's and I've no idea if they are the same. is this for a RAM Mount?

If I could use that w/ a TomTom GO 940 if and when they're available in the USA, that would be great. I have a Nuvi 205 right now and the voice recognition feature on the 940 would be a useful feature to me.

It'd be simpler to replace that with an adhesive disk and then affix TomTom's mount to that?

It's a curved surface and adhesive disks don't stick well on it. I tried doing that with the adhesive disc that came with my Garmin and it just kept coming off.

I guess I could just use self-tapping screws to screw through the TomTom mount (the part with the ball on it) and screw into the same holes I used for the Garmin mounting ball.
