Computer shuts down but doesn't power off completely

What a brilliant idea to have a Non SatNav Technical Help forum Thumbs Up

, so here goes to kick it off.

When I turn off my computer running XP Home, it shuts down normally and appears to be dead, and so long as I don't turn off the power supply will start up normally as well. But, the USBs are still powered, and if I turn anything connected my USB on the computer will boot up. For example, I shut down the computer but the green charging light stays on on my TT Go 720. If I then press the power button on the TT while it's still in its cradle the computer boots up.

If I turn off the power after it has shut down, next time I turn on, I get a black screen with several lines of text and at the bottom it says "Defaults Loaded, press F1 to continue" That allows it to boot up normally but the date & time have reverted to some time on 31st December 2005. So I always leave the power on.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Hi, it might be worth checking the Power settings for your machine. For example, on my Acer Aspire, it is possible to set the actions for closing the lid, pressing the Off button or hitting a programmable function key.

Perhaps your machine is going in to Sleep or Hibernation mode?

Thanks Robert, I was confused because the newsletter link took me to your announcement and it looked as though there were no posts. So I posted thinking I was first and only when I had submitted it and returned to the forum I found there were 4 pages already.

Was there not a Lost Satellite Fix - Off Topic Area forum before that had many more pages?

Thanks to the other posters. I'll give your suggestions a try later and let you know how I get on.

There is an option in the bios that will allow a pc to wake upon a key entry or the click of a mouse. Many bios have options associated with this including a specific key on the board or just having to move the mouse. It would be worth looking as these settings and disabling them as necessary. This option is not normally accessible from the windows settings!

Thanks montdom, I'm not sure how you edit the BOIS. Is that where you enter by pressing "Del" after turning on, and where you set things like the boot order?

I have several USB Root Hubs and in Power Management the only available option is to uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power." They are all ticked.

The Boot order is Hard Drive first, then CD.

The only power options I can find are for the monitor in the screen saver settings.

I can't see any "'wake on lan" option

All the power up options in the BIOS are disabled and there are these options which I haven't touched as I don't know what they do:

ACPI Suspend Type S1 to S3
ACPI SPIC Support enabled with no choice to disable it
Restore on AC Power Loss Power-Off (Options are Power-on & Last State)
PWR Button <4 Seconds Instant-Off (Option is Suspend)

I can't see anything obvious there that would cause my problem.

I've just checked the Power Options on my laptop and find that the Power On/Off button can be set as a Sleep setting.

If i could discover how to copy and paste a coupleof screenshots in to a post, you'd be able to see the setup.

Sorry Richard, I meant to add a reply to you but there's no edit on this forum.

I'm sure my power button is set to power off because it goes through all the normal screens "Logging off", "Saving your settings", "shutting down". And when I turn on again it boots up normally, if it's in sleep or standby I think it comes on almost instantly.

But thanks anyway. It's not a big deal if I can't fix it, but I'm hoping Mullet has the answer.
