My Navman 510 has just died so looking for replacement. Had almost decided on 865T but then saw 1490WT similar spec but so very much cheaper. What am I missing? Is the 865 so much better? |

The most obvious difference is the 865 allows for voice control of the pnd functions while the 1490 does not. A more subtle one is the 865 runs on Linux, while the 1490 uses Garmin's proprietary OS (quite solid BTW). Why would that matter? The Linux dev's over at Garmin are separate from the proprietary OS guys, and have a few features unique to them. One that stands out is the ability to selectively block specific roads and even entire areas from being used in route computations, something lacking on most nuvi models. Want to avoid your ex's neighborhood, and the nuvi 8xx's make that quite easy. Between the two devices, I'd prefer the 1490, but if you've always wanted a bit more in avoidance options and/or voice control, the 8xx series may interest you.
Note the newer and inexpensive cityXplorer™ Maps offer no real benefits to the older 8x5 nuvis but do bring some excellent pedestrian features to the 1490. Something to keep in mind if you visit traditional tourist destinations with any frequency. _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr. |

Well, thank you for that Gatorguy, your thoughts were most interesting. Voice control was not on my wish list and the other feature could be useful, my old unit had an irritating habit of taking me down footpaths, but you could never know that in advance anyway so perhaps it would not be worth another £100. Thanks again for your thoughts. |
