You can certainly do this with the phones that use a more established operating system, in fact you can even load up OS maps to some phones and display your current GPS position on the map as well as a who;e lot of other features.
MicroSoft Windows Mobile for the PDA based devices probably offers the best choice of add on application software, this is for the devices with touch screens.
You can also consider the MS SmartPhone devices which again run a version of the MS Windows Mobile but they don't have a touch screen.
Finally there are the Nokia Symbian OS which again can run third party applications that will provide you with the OSGB coordinates on the display and all three types of these phones can be obtained with integral GPS receivers.
The Sony device you have highlighted looks like it will run Java based applications but your choices of software will be rather limited, although it is not a phone I am too familiar with.
It is rather difficult to offer more advice as to specific manufacturers or models as a phone choice is only something you can make for yourself. If you make a list of functions that are desirable from the phone we might be able to point you a few directions - Mike |

Thanks Mike,
I use a garmin 60csx most of the time but occasionally when I am out without it and taking photos I would like to be able to log my position in OS GB format to check on my o/s mapping when I get home. I have always got my phone so if that could tell me it would be great. That is all I want. Anything else is a bonus.
The Sony C702 appeals because of my familiarity with sony phones and synching with my outlook data.
regards

One thing the Sony will do is Geo-Tag a photograph using its built in GPS, this will embed the Lat/ Long into the Exif data which is part of the jpg picture data, it won't be in OSGB format but you could soon post convert this on the PC, have a read of This if you look at the other pages it also claims to data log as you walk so it sounds like it might do what you need - Mike |
