Can they not just haul you off to the local nick and hold you there until it gets sorted (i.e. you pay), or have they no powers of detention for roadside penalties?

I was under the impression that, these days, if you get any kind of infraction against your name (and by extension, driver's licence), it'll be flagged up whenever you pass through Douane and you'll most likely be taken to one side and asked to pay ;)
