Anyone else moved up from version 2 only to be disappointed and reverted back?

Key issues for me. A few of my "cant live without" addons are not yet updated.

1. menu editor
2. plain oldfavorites
3. tabbrowser preferences

The first two I could perhaps wait for, but 3. to me is essential.

The tab focusing seems quite strange in version 3.

One thing I will miss from version 3 will be the predictive favorites search through the address bar. This will be sorely missed.

email the developers of the addons and tell them to get their back ends in gear!! i've been playing on and off with ff3 for nearly a year now (mozilla paradiso in the early months) so it's not like they haven't had time to develop anything?!

It is usually the case to wait for addons to be updated, but the tabbrowser guys page is dead and I read elsewhere support is not being continued. So a bit stuffed ATM.

I gave up on the menu editor as it wasn't important, favorites are handled quite differently and the "awsome bar" makes sorting of bookmarks and favorites almost irrelevent.

However, I've been holding off FF3.5 because two of my must have extensions are showing as incompatible, namely NoSquint (handles magnification for my 12" screen) and DigitalPersona (manages fingerprint logins).

If anyone else is interested NoSquint can be updated to the compatible beta version here, HP version of DP 4.01 can be found here and the DP modified extension here.

They took a bit of searching for but everything is working fine.

BTW, Some interesting FF tips here. The speed tips in Section 13 have an impact.

you can use about:config to tell FF to ignore teh 'compatible versions' in add-ons. i.e. even though a developer has not updated mozilla/their addon with info to say it is compatible - it MAY actually be compatible anyway. worth a try? if it fails then simply revert the setting(s)

I tried that but it didnt work. That allows FF to download any addon version but there are a couple of lines in this extension "install.rdf" file that look up the FF version and abort. I tried to modify that file myself without success.

Yes the NoSquint works as it should but now has some eye candy colouring options that I haven't looked at yet.

It may seem obvious be here's a tip I figured out if anyone has the need.

Problem: I just installed Firefox on my works PC but the security ware has blacklisted the extensions of the addons (.xpi). If you try to download an addon it will auto install, so thoughts of saving to a pendrive at home is futile.

Solution: Simply go to the FF addons page with Internet Explorer or IE Tab. The "Add to Firefox" is replaced by "Download Now".

Finally, transfer to a pendrive then drag the .xpi file into FF browser to install.

More usefully, it doubles as a fast and convenient way to transfer your favourite addons between any PC or fresh install. Then once installed hit the update button to get the newest versions.

Very simple, but it had me stumped. Rolling Eyes

Cheers Mullet.
Knew there was one due - or rather well overdue.

3.6 should be out soon too. been using the betas for a while. pretty sure there should be a release candidate too!

as for backing up your add ons when moving to fresh install / new system etc why not just take a copy of the profile folder and then link to that on teh new computer/installation? i did that for both firefox and thunderbird when i moved from my windows laptop to the macbook - all worked flawlessly.

Hi MaFt,

I read that 2, this release has been held up and the next couple have been put back as well (apparently).
I did have a look at the beta last year for a while, but back to the stable versions.
I use Time Capsule/Time Machine for all my backups now. Just as well as my HDD went bottoms up in November, which wasn't all bad as gave me an excuse to go for a 500Gb 7200rpm and 4gb RAM.
Apple shops don't let you do that as they only replace 'like for like' and won't give you the old HDD back, so went to an authorised reseller - very good to - in High Wycombe. Did it in 1 day, Apple said 5-10 days!!, and Apple were 40 quid more expensive.

Know this is all off topic - so will shut up Smile

as for backing up ....

Normally I would, but I had to find something different because I had several problems with FF reverting to default and losing my profile. I suspect something was corrupting the profile. Each time I did a clean install which was a bit of a chore, and this got round that. It just leaves me customize the tool bar and import bookmarks and addon settings.
