Regional vs. European maps

I have a question re UK vs. Europe maps for Garmin sat-navs. Phoned Garmin to ask about the cost difference of updating maps for both Garmin 200/205 and Garmin 250/255. They said Garmin doesn't produce regional map updates (only Europe). However, browsing the Internet, i came across regional updates for Garmin nuvi's (on SD cards) and they turn out to be cheaper than European ones. So, how is it with these map updates?

The one issue with the regional mapping as compared with all of Europe is that you can't plan a route across the regional boundaries I believe.
