A common problem with all SatNav users is that the Map Data is never up to date, nor will it ever be.
TomTom may have a slight advantage with the community based input being available to TomTom users before being incorporated into the TeleAtlas maps, but they will not get the core surveyed updates before any of the other clients.
I am also beginning to wonder about the value of the community updates as well. I am seeing large numbers of errors appearing in the mapping that were not there in previous releases, some of which are obviously where someone has misunderstood a roadsign... _________________ Mike Barrett

Its for this reason we ask people with specific map queries to post their questions in the forums here so people with the latest map can check. This means there is no second guessing involved as to whether google maps etc are the maps you would get in your new tomtom unit
A couple of months ago I posted a question about Swansea, but got no replies. On the v7.20map, does The Kingsway, Swansea, show up as one-way or 2-way, and is there a roundabout at either end? (It has been one-way for about 2 years, and the roundabouts disappeared about 12-18 months ago, but the old system is still on my 7.15 map)

right, that's what i was trying to say before - tele atlas isn't going to give tomtom an advantage over other GPS providers (it wouldn't be ethical, or fair), but i imagine tele atlas and tomtom will eventually efficiently streamline their map update processes.
as for tele atlas using community updates - i'm not sure what kind of area you are in, but i can see there being problems in less populated areas. however, in cities, i imagine margin of error will be similar to that of a wikipedia - there will be errors, but proper maintenance and user input should iron out most of the kinks
