Can anyone clarify - would it be wrong to assume that details I can currently see in map data displayed by third parties that use TeleAtlas data (e.g. Google Maps) would also be available in the latest version of TomTom's maps?

I ask, because finally, after about three years, the new estate (or rather not so new estate!) that I live on is finally visible on Google Maps, so I'm wondering whether that means it would now also be in the latest TomTom map (v7.20 being the latest version available for my TomTom One 2nd Edition).

Cheers.

If you post details of the estate in question, i can check as i have the latest (v7.20) maps. Post code, or grid ref etc.

And just to clarify, the v7.20 and v8.05 maps are identicle in their mapping data, just v8 maps have IQ routes and Advanced Lane Guidance.

Yes, you would be wrong to assume that.
If it is NOT on Google maps, you can assume it isn't on the TomTom maps, but just because it is on Google, is no guarantee it is on TomTom's.

Thanks for that. Take a look here on Google Maps.

I'm not sure if any of the postcodes will be accurate, so just try entering one of the below roads, town name 'Weston Turville'.

I'm looking for any of the following in the TomTom v7.20 map:

Alder Road
Hornbeam Way
Tamarisk Way
Almond Tree Drive
Silver Birch Way
Whitebeam Close

Thanks very much!

Yes the roads are as google/teleatlas show, apart from the tamarisk way, thats is NOT shown at all. The roundabout with the a413 and all other estate roads are shown on the latest mapping.

Excellent, thanks very much for checking that out. It's about time I got myself a map upgrade anyway, so it's always nice to know my own area is now on the map!

Why is that, Andy? Isn't it possible that TomTom might release a new map faster than Google? Not too likely, I'm sure, but I'm not aware of any reason that it couldn't happen, i.e. licensing agreements with Tele Atlas, time to process/load data, etc.

It's partly, at least, because Google just uses the raw data, whereas GPS manufacturers have to process the data - route calculation algorithms, turn restrictions etc.

This data processing obviously delays updates being included on TomTom maps vs Google.

It's also worth bearing in mind that although TeleAtlas supplies maps to several GPS manufacturers, they each process the data in their own unique way, so updates may be shown on one brand's maps before another.

Its for this reason we ask people with specific map queries to post their questions in the forums here so people with the latest map can check. This means there is no second guessing involved as to whether google maps etc are the maps you would get in your new tomtom unit Smile

Do we know for sure that Google's licensing of Tele Atlas maps include quarterly updates?

Judging by the version numbers, it appears that TomTom does process and release on a quarterly basis. Even if map-only updates are sometimes only every six months, there are usually intermediate releases on new devices.

Not trying to be contrary - this is something I've puzzled over for a while and just want to make sure that we've covered as many lines of thought as possible to ensure our assumptions are accurate.

This is an even more challenging question in the US, where Google Maps currently (soon to change, I know) use Navteq data, but Google Earth uses Tele Atlas...

The time to delivery also comes into the equation. If Google get the maps and convert then to their internal format at the same time as TomTom do then Google deliver the maps instantly on the server. TomTom still have to test, package and release the maps. OK for internet delivery this can be reasonably quick, but for product bought off the shelf it can induce quite a delay.

it's safe to assume, however, that tomtom (now and going into the future) will be able to put out the latest teleatlas maps first (ahead of other GPS providers). they should be able to streamline their map updates pretty easily. google will definitely get the map fixes first; however, there's an open stream of information between the three companies. google maps edits and tomtom mapshare edits are both sent to teleatlas, and they will use those to help build out their maps.

According to both Teleatlas and TomTom this will not be the case. TomTom will have no advantage over any other Teleatlas customer. They will get the map updates at the same time as all the other customers.

what do you mean, at the same time as all the other customers? like mio owners? a common complaint i hear from mio owners already is that their maps are constantly out of date. if that pattern holds up in the future, how would tomtom not have the most current teleatlas maps? what about the people using google maps mobile? do they have to wait until tomtom gets their updates before they reap the benefits of the teleatlas maps?

Tele Atlas will ship their product to all of their customers (including TomTom) at the same time. What their customers do with the Tele Atlas product at that point is up to the them. If Mio is slower to compile and release the updates than TomTom, it isn't Tele Atlas' fault.
