MacRumors have reported here that the the long awaited Navigation apps for the iPhone may be coming. We know that a number of companies have "proof of concept" solutions but this is a long way from having a product. A number of issues have to be overcome not least the deployment through iTunes and the revenue share for Apple.
Although there is nothing concrete in the article it does show that the people at Apple are thinking about it.

Who's betting that they'll market it as "Revolutionary Innovation from Apple - SatNav in a phone!!" 
We've been running SatNav on PDAs and phones for years...still...the Apple fanboys will no doubt fall for it.

Actually - what I'd like is something with the functionality and flexibilty of Windoze Mobile with the slick shiny user interface of the iPhone. the HTC Diamond gets part of the way there...

I've been pretty impressed with the 3G so far (but then I would!)... What I'd really like is some Sat Nav functionality!!

I have been with WM for three years now. Sure there is a vast range of apps compared to what Apple allow to seep through, but genuinely out of the 1000s available, I ask myself, how many are good?, how many are of use to me? I have tried dozens but just retain a hand full. Regarding choice, jailbreak is the answer to the Apple prison cell.
For some time I have been a bit disillusioned with the sluggishness of my two devices, which BTW I run overclocked. I do understand that the faster CPU on the Diamond should improve on this. But having poked my friends iPhone there is little to compare for speed and flow.
What really sways me to the iPhone direction is 16GB storage, 3G and the 3.5" screen. I am struggling a bit with the 2.8" now. I appreciate I could jump through the hoops and possibly find this spec in WM format but I am ready for a change. If it doesnt work out, well the iPhones are hot cakes at the moment.
Please don't mistake this post, I am no fanboy either way. My final choice will be through research, merit and needs, not by fad.
I've still several weeks to run on my contract so my mind is not 100% set just yet and obviously GPS is a major consideration.

My intention will be to tether the iPhone for 3G internet access on my laptop when away from home. Have you any interest or looked into this?
Whats the battery life like. |

Have you considered the HTC Sedna with a couple of 32GB cards loaded that adds up to a massive 64GB storage without even touching the built in storage capability - although 32GB cards are not too mainstream as yet so it would be a very costly method to upstage the iFone - Mike |

You can forget that at the moment. Tethering as a modem is explicitly prohibited at present and two apps which enabled this appeared on Appstore only to be very quickly removed by Apple.

Oh indeed not, in fact I have just seen a news item that one of the 'tehering' apps is now available once again on the US AppStore, sadly not the UK one as yet

| Probably the apps get pulled due to objections from the standard carriers. However tethering can be achieved manually on a jailbroken iPhone. |

I missed the opportunity to download the original app from the AppStore that enabled tethering; although I don't 'need' it (I have a 3G card through work), it would be a welcome capability for personal use (not that I plan to travel with 2 laptops often!). I know that AT&T protested at the tethering app., but I don't see why it couldn't be downloaded elsewhere - us in the UK can't access the US-based music streaming apps like Pandora, so why doesn't it cut both ways? Still all the UK Telcos probably protested too - they're all obsessed with selling mobile broadband pebbles & contracts.
I haven't looked into jailbreaking the device yet - I'd prefer to stay an Orwellian 'Apple' drone if possible (oh isn't that rich - 1984 and all that!).
As for the battery life, it's pretty appalling. For anything like continuous sat nav, it would need to be connected to an external power source (which isn't a major hardship in a car, but more problematic on a bike!). If you shut off location-services, 3G and WiFi it improves, but then you're only getting half the device.
The real pain in this respect is Apple's insistence on knowing better and not allowing user access to the battery.
It would also be useful to get 'background' capability for third party apps - there's a great (and free) GPS tracking app available, but only functions (in accordance with the SDK) when running in the foreground, limiting its use a lot.
All that said, I've hardly put it down since getting it (hence the loss of charge!). It's a great piece of kit.

Purely a guess, but I would reckon the offending tether app had settings pre configured for the likes of AT&T, and have been removed prior to re release? Carriers both US and UK are eager to sell an "all you can eat" data contract, but they hide away all the big dinner plates.
As mentioned earlier there are apps that can do this on a jailbroken.
Re battery, thats what I an hearing. 3G appears to be hungry. Due to the battery no swap, bolt on power packs are appearing, but they are huge.
I understand the feeble reasons for not allowing running in the background (cant even do copy & paste across apps) but this will surely need to change for proper navigation.
