| Downloaded new version of Zone alarm and all okay now so it was not a temporary fix but a permanent fix ( zone alarm version number 7.0.483.000) |

Unfortunately Windows updated itself overnight on Tuesday and when I couldn't get a connection Wednesday morning I phoned my ISP. They didn't know about it but suggested disabling ZA to see if that was causing it, and said Windows Firewall was perfectly adequate.
Do you guys agree, or would you advise updating ZA (the free version) and reverting to using that again?

the only thing i found ith windows firewall is it's pretty difficult (at times impossible?) to customise it so if you have specific network applications such as VPN or VNC etc then it can be a real pain!!
realy though, if you have a decent router with a NAT firewall then you don't need a software firewall like ZA. i have comodo firewall installed on my laptop but only because i use public wifi hotspots... my main pc has no software firewall running.

This is exactly what my son says that zone alarm is not necessary for the reasons you give.
But to honest I have used it for years its free and runs in the background and usually never causes any problems not like Macfee which seems to want to control everything |

Plenty of arguments either way on the router firewall.
Just remember if you are using a laptop, ensure you have some form of firewall software installed if you roam and use any internet access other than your own (eg. WiFi, hotel etc). Dont rely on other people for protection.
FWIW I am quite happy to employ the windows firewall and have no problems creating exceptions within Vista.
Use the cash saving on something useful, like competent spyware protection. |

True, but one big advantage of a hardware firewall over a software one is that you're stopping the stuff even reaching your PC.
Having a software firewall is a bit like leaving all your doors and windows open when you go out and hoping that your pet poodle stops burglars taking anything, whereas a hardware firewall is more like having your windows and doors locked and making it more difficult for the burglars to gain access.
For many years, a router firewall has been my preference because it gives the ability to connect multiple devices for one thing and why just buy a router when you can have a firewall router?
Several years ago, in a previous life, I installed a software firewall form a reputable manufacturer and when I ran the security tests on that same company's web site, it told me that I was just as much at risk as I'd been before I'd installed THEIR software.

Thanks (I think!) for all the advice.
I just have a pc running Windows XP and with radio broadband, and I've been using AVG and the free ZA for years with no problem - as far as I know.
I don't have a laptop, network or router.
And I'm now more confused than ever!

My personal opinion is if you have been running with the set up you have for many years and have not had any problems why change !!
This was just a blip for zone alarm and it does quite well along with AVG in computer magazine product tests .
If you have not got any spyware checkers it may be a good idea to get one there are plenty of free ones out there such as Spybot search and destroy .Adaware,a-squared.
I do believe the new version of AVG has a spyware scanner built in it but you find some spyware scanners pick up some spyware that some others miss |

My suggestion is to stick with what you have got. You havn't got a firewalled router so you nead a S/W firewall. Download and install the lates ZA (Link on previous page) then do the Windows update. It worked fine for me this morning.
I use AVG Free anti virus, the latest incarnation has a spyware detector etc, but I run a scan with Spybot and Ad Aware every so often. |

But you only realy need a router with a NAT firewall (whatever that is) if you have more than one computer. So Anita, get yourself unconfused, unlass of course someone else says that you MUST have a router or the world will end on Friday next  |

Life is never 100% certain and neither is this. The smart thing to do would to run both. The old belt and braces approach.
