GPS problem - Memory Map & Tomtom conflict?

Hi - hope someone can help cos I am going crazy trying to get my gps to work.
I have a new smartphone (unbranded) with built in gps running on WM6.
It came preinstalled with TomTom Navigator 6 which works fine but I have also installed Memory Map and cannot get the GPS to work with this - error message either says cannot open com port, times out or 'failed to terminate rs232 thread' depending on settings I use.
Contacted Memory Map helpdesk who said they couldnt help - probably TomTom is blocking the Com port. Any suggestions gratefully received - I have already installed GPSGate and can't get this to work either (can't find GPS!).

What phone is it that you are using it must have a make or model number/ name etc look under the battery near the sim card as they often have ID around that area - Mike

I believe the make is ZTC (possibly manufactured by CECT in China) - battery is X-ONE - but don't think this is model number.
I bought it on e-bay - item no. 160244338618 if this helps at all.

You need to set up the GPS in Memory Map correctly for it to use the built in receiver, for a start fire up Memory Map and go to Menu/ GPS/ Setup set the manufacturer to NMEA, then you will have to play around with the com port values and baud speed settings, I would try 4800 for Baud speed as this is widely used.

Make sure you have fully quit the TomTom application before trying this, even a soft reset might be worth trying as doing so will remove any possibility of TomTom port hogging - Mike

Have tried all of this and still no joy - any other suggestions?

Have a look at the tomtom gps configuration for some clues as to what it is using, tap the signal strength meter (bottom right) then on the next screen that appears tap the sat indicator about a third of the way down on the right side of the screen.
ow you will have the option to press Configure try this and see what options have been selected - does it say "Built in GPS Device" or something else - Mike

It's a PocketPC Phone Edition or whatever they call them these days rather than a smartphone.

Mike it connects using 'Other NMEA GPS receiver' at baud rate of 4800 on COM 1.
Darren - sorry if my description caused any confusion - do you have any suggestions to help resolve my problem?

Use the same settings for the Memory Map application and it should work, although there are a number of devices that make a call on the GPS port that results in the actual hardware not starting (the GPS Reciever)

When you start TomTom do you get any visual clue such as an LED that the GPS has started - quite often this is a yellow/ orange indication. If you get this with TomTom do you get the same with MM, this problem could be quite simple that MM is incapable of starting the GPS receiver in the phone that you have purchased - Mike

Thanks Mike - though still cant open com port. No LED or anything to indicate when GPS is on. Any suggestions if MM isnt accessing GPS unit? As mentioned previously I have seen mention elsewhere that Tomtom may be blocking this somehow - and if so how can I unblock it?

The TomTom blocking COM Port issue only occurred in very early versions some years ago, what version of TomTom do you have?

OK, and you have used the same settings in MM? Try a soft reset then launch MM with those settings
