NV-U50 lost map

Hi guys need help
i have a sony nv-u50 and a problem....aprox 9 months ago i tried to backup the pre-installed map and everything went t!%$ up not only did it NOT save the map to my pc but also wiped it from the unit......not too much of a problem i thought as various websites said simply reload it from the cd suplied with the unit.
This is not to be as the cd supplied with the unit doesnt contain any map data whatsoeva so i was fighting a loosing battle...after 9 months and contacting sony direct aswell as navteq and semnedis(supliers to sony) i have been told that the only way to fix my problem is to pay sony £42 for a map update which may not work (as i dont have the pre-installed map to update)
so if any of u kind people have done a successful backup of your original map and still have a copy on your pc and would be willing to send a copy to me i would appreciate it greatly
Im still not sure about updating (£42) as i can buy a new unit which will be more uptodate than sonys update for £59.99 +VAT at my local retail outlet
Thx in advance for any replies or help with this as u can probably tell by the name im more than frustrated by this subject and will never buy another sony Mad

Thats all well and good, but wouldnt sending you the map be a breach of copyright? I dont have a sony personally, but if they are anything like Tomtom maps, you cant (legally) copy them between users.

no only if it was the updated map (the £42 map) the standard map that is loaded onto the unit when it comes from the manufacturer is provided by navteq who no longer supply sony or provide support...and cant be copyright infringement when technicaly i have already paid for the map (in with price of the unit)
i am not wishing to break any laws(copyright etc.) i only to get the unit up and running again as at the moment it is completely useless as i cant even purchase the update because i havent got any map in the unit to update....
