Are we talking about a TomTom Device or the new Euro Fighter?

I'd also read that you couldn't get the Itinerary function back on a One 3rd edition any more.
So does it look like ALL custom menu tweaking has been scuppered by V8?

It would appear so Andy, TomTom seem to be moving more to having total control of what you have installed, wondering how long before PGPSW camera database will no longer work.

Itinerary planning continues to work on a 720 with v8.010.

I use that feature specifically to dictate my route to/from work via particular waypoints.

The Itinerary function appears no different in v8.010 than it did in v7.481 or v7.221

Hope this helps for those not getting offered it automatically (Thanks to SmartDriver for the links):

1) Is for x20 Devices etc
2) Is for x30, as the filenames imply. No liability accepted, but as you can see, these are TomTom site links.

Thought it worth noting that the x20 file worked on my TT1 SE, US version.

Not all menu tweaking has been been scuppered but TomTom have removed the back door hack we used to use on the One Third Edition to access Itinerary planning.
TomTom always maintained that Itinerary planning didn't work on the One Third Edition, which was incorrect with version 7 they simply pulled the icon from the menu, with Navcore 8 they have altered the code so it cannot work.

Other short falls are the Browse Map screen when using Traffic on the One third edition or One XL, to access this information takes nine screen taps through various menu pages! This dumbing down of the lower end models is a real shame and something I hope TomTom put right in later releases, removal of features that people are used to using is not a very smart move. - Mike

The other problem is when I use the 'TomTom Home' programme. Whenever going to select the 'Operate my device' option I always get the message to download a necessary programme even though this has been carried out when previously running the programme.

So feel sympathy for me then - I have 8.010 on three devices and it does it to me every time for every device!

Serves you right for having three devices......

I'm in need of a file so I can do a little test. Can someone please post the .toc file that was apart of the navcore 8 download. It should be in "My Documents" under where you store your TomTom stuff. The directory tree should look like the the following.

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\program

Thanks.

What do you need the toc file for? just perform a manual update using Windows Explorer as explained earlier in the thread - Mike

So, having read all the previous comments I downloaded the correct .cab file for my unit for the v8 update. I connected my Go720 to my PC, clicked 'yes' to connect, and then extracted this from the zip file (I wasn't offered the option to save) direct to my Go720 through Explorer.

Result - nothing.

My TT still says I have v 7.481 installed.

Am I doing something wrong here?

(Oh, and yes, I did take a copy of the whole system before starting)

Check page 8 or 9 of this thread where there is a guide on how to do the update from the CAB file which uses Winrar to extract the files from the CaB directly to the device - Mike

Thanks Mike, had seen the instructions on p9 but hadn't associated the need to use WinRAR with this downlaod on all occasions - had thought this was specific to one problem. Doh!

All fine now, v 8.010 loaded

thanks again

, the update has borked the speech recognition 'feature'.
Does not work at all, infact, it is no longer one of the options under the 'navigate to' etc icons. Sad

I don't think the manual install does everything that the automatic one does. Am I wrong?

I like to use my TomTom One XL with a tidy memory, so I try to avoid filling it up with files that are not used. When a new firmware application comes out I usually let Home do the upgrade first, this will then put the software in the TomTom download folder. I then do this:

Remove the Memory card and copy, map folder, zip folder and the raster folder to a folder on my computer. Also any custom start and suspend .bmps

I then do a quick format of the card choosing fat32 and the copy those three folders back to the card, leaving the .bmps to the end otherwise they get overwritten.

I then put the card in the TomTom and reset it.

Using TomTom Home 'Add maps, traffic, voices etc' 'Items on My Computer', I then choose ‘Application’ which installs the latest firmware which has been downloaded to your computer.

You then reboot the TomTom and reconnect it. Then repeat the above steps with whatever voices you want, QuickGPSfix and phone connection settings.

If you have custom start and suspend .bmps then add them next and rejoin mapshare.

It works for me, and it gives a nice clean install.
