Do any of you know if there is a user manual or idiot guide out there for POIEdit?
If an idiot ever needed a guide, I am he Smile

I have downloaded and installed POIEdit on my home PC. I start it and am asked what I want to do. I choose Create new POI file.
I am then shown a blank file and a map of Holland.....

If I download POI's from this site, what do I do with them then?
I want to try to combine some of the larger categories, such as ATM's and Fuel etc.

Sorry for being thick, but I don't appear to be able to hit the right buttons Embarassed

Tom You cant be that bad, It is quite easy once you get into it, just persevere a little bit, the standard map is rubbish, but maps are available and better including google, i think they are available from the side menu and if you click on a particular Poi it will highlight its postion on the map, honestly it is quite easy and usefull, whats your specific question i am sure we can answer.

Tom I suggest you start with a better map, if you create a new file then you will have to insert your own POIs i.e. long-lat-description, description can include anything you want, insert better map and insert one poi and click on it and you will see that you are well on your way, you will then realise that you dont need a manual.

I am not on my home PC, so cannot try your advice immediately.
Basically I just want to get started.
I clicked in the Google Map tab this afternoon, but that was blank. Also how do I actually get POI's into the programme? There does not appear to be an import option or a Save as option either.
I suppose the obvious, but I didn't try it, is to drag and drop.
Am I right in thinking that I create a file called, for instance ATM, then just drop all the ATM's that I want on to it?

To import a POI file click on files/open and insert your existing poi file , I have just checked and go into tools/site status and find Maps and upload UK map, I personally use a google map which is same as on pgpsw site dont know where it came from but the only one i can see in sub directory is google.dll, I do have mapoint and other maps in my maps sub directory.

No you do not create then load, you just open the file modify if necc and save if file already called atm.ov2 or save as if you want to name it something else or convert to another format (presuming you are using ov2 files

No one has yet said exactly what to do to merge several poi files together!

Simply go to the FILE menu and OPEN the first POI file - you should see a list of all the entries in the file n the right side of the POIEdit window

Then go to the FILE menu again, but this time select APPEND, and pick the next POI file you want to add.

Repeat FILE/APPEND for every other file you want to add.

When done, select FILE/SAVE AS.. and type in the name you want for the combined file.

As for the maps, you reslly need the Google map add-on, then you just click on an entry in the list and it shows it on the map. Not a lot more to it than that!
