Hi all,
Just bought my first SatNAv device. So now have a nice shiney new SatNav and a clapped out old car - its looks odd.

But as a first time SatNav user I've got a few questions, although I've not used it at all yet, just trying to work it all out.

Firstly my in the pack was a voucher code for an update via TomTom Home. Although when I go to try to redeem it, it says its either been used or expired.

But I think its for a map update, but the home software seems to suggest that it has updated my map to the most recent one anyway.

I've also got the Share corrections thingy on my device, whats peoples experience with it? is it good? is it abused?

Also what do people think of the software TomTom Home? from a couple of posts I read some people don't seem to like it. Is there something better to use?

But the main thing I want to do next is create my own POI catagory and a list of my own POI. But I don't seem to be able to. Needing some help on this. Another post I read said that the One doesn't support creation of POI.
Can I create them on my computer and upload them to my One? If so, what software do I need/is the best etc.

Sorry if any of that was a bit vague, i'm still getting to grips with it, I've not used my device yet on a journey, I'm just trying to get it to do all I want it to do.

Anyway thanks in advance for any help you can give.
It will be most appreciated.
Cheers

Welcome to the forum, the device you have is the One Third Edition Europe model which is in fact a One v6, but don't let that worry you the One devices have followed a very strange numbering sequence since they launched.

Go to the TomTom One, Go, Rider forum section and have a look at the sticky threads near the top of the forum index, start with the FAQ page and read some of the links, the most important being a backup using Windows Explorer (FAQ #1) Please do this BEFORE you do anything else with the unit. Once you have finished messing around with the device and it is stable doin what you want back it up again.

If you want full POI menus on the device also have a read of the One Third Edition sticky in the same forum index, towards the end of that write up I have detailed how to put the full POI functions and Itinerary planning back on the device.

As for your map, what is actually installed on the unit, tap the sat strength meter lower right corner, than tap the version box on the right side of the screen. The latest map is v720 if you have anything earlier you might need to talk to TomTom support as their server has being playing up of late. You can phone them directly using 0845 161 0009

The Home software isn't something I like to use, but it is necessary for map updates and map share, everything else can be handled using Windows Explorer.

Take some time out to read the pages I mentioned above and it will answer a good number of questions, some of which you have not even considered as yet, the device is a decent bit of kit and with a little customisation can be made considerably better - Mike

Mike - Thank you for your reply, it was very helpful. I'm still reading as there is lots to get through.
I hadn't thought about backing it up to start with. But I will as soon as I get home.

Couple of other questions (I'm not sure if the answers are in the faq's etc. as I haven't finished reading them yet)

On some streets there seems to be house numbers, on some of the other streets (particularly small streets) they don't seem to have any house numbers. Are they supposed to all have numbers? or just less popular streets not have numbers etc.?

When I updated some of the elements (maps or software not sure which) through the Home software. it seems to have deleted my favorites. Its not a great problem as I had only entered a few. But still annoying. Does this happen everytime you update certain things? if so which ones?

Currently on application 7.166, map 7.20

Well you have the latest map and software so I wouldn't worry too much about that, the favourites are stored in the map folder so it is quite possible it deleted the old files when it updated your map.

I store regular locations within a POI file as it is more reliable than the favourites option and doesn't have the same limitations with quantities.

As for house numbers, some roads will contain them others will not there is no fixed rule as to what the map data will contain, although this is an area that has suffered from degradation over the past few map releases IMHO - Mike

Couple of other points

What happens when you want to enter a buildings name as it doesn't have a number? I can't see any option to do that.

Also when going on a trip and needing to go from A to B, but wanting to go via C and D. It will only let me put one place to go via. i.e. only go via C or D not both. Anyway to get round that?

Also for some reason, by main computer won't recognise my TT, but my laptop will. I've currently done everything on my laptop as I was away when I bought it. But as my laptop is pretty crap, I want all the backups etc. on my main computer. Both are running WinXP pro. Any ideas?

Cheers

The Itinerary Function meets that need.

It could be something to do with Administrator Rights, or User Policies.

What happens when you try to connect to the PC?

Do you get the message on the Device asking if you want to connect?

Can you see the Device in Explorer?

Have you tried a different USB lead/port?

Building names are not supported, numbers are but if you don't know the specific number hit enter and the device will go to the middle of the chosen road.

If you have followed the earlier information and installed the custom menu you will have an option called "Itinerary Planning" available, use this for multiple via's on a single route.

Do you connect to the PC via a UB port on the rear of the case as these are dirrectly attached to the motherboard, some other ports such as hubs etc do not work reliably with the TomTom units - Mike
