Do I have to be navigating a route for the data boxes to appear on the screen? They don't appear to be visible when just logging a trip ( using the unit without following a route)!

Data boxes (either 2 or 4) are visible optionally on the GPS Map page - go to Settings, 2/4 Data box Layout, Select and you can choose what data you want in each box. These are editable only on the GPS Map page. To get them to appear on the GPS Map page, hit the lower left side button once for 2 Data Box, twice for 4 Data Box, a third time to close them all.
