Is there an artificial limit to the number of photos allowed in the "photos" folder on a TT Go 720 anyone?
Reason I ask, is because I spent this afternoon creating a whole raft of 480x272 ready sized, standard jpeg images, for use as changeable Startup screens.
But when I copy them all over to the "photos" folder I created on my SD card, with lots of free space, the TT doesn't like it.
If you choose either to Browse Photos, OR to try to change the Startup Screen using the relevant menu, the 720 tries to "read" all the photos, but then resets and reboots.
By a process of trial and error, I have found that 24 is the maximum number it likes whereby it WILL work fine (making 30 or so in total, as it finds it's own images on the internal memory "photos" folder too.
But any more than this, and it keels over and dies.
This seems a very small amount.
Does anyone have any experience of this?
To the best of my knowledge, the files are standard format jpeg images, around 160K each in size, with no strange characters in the filename etc.
Indeed, like I say, if I cut down on the number, they work FINE - it's just when I have more than 24 (thus 30 or so in total between internal and SD) that the TomTom has a hissy-fit and reboots when trying to read them all.
Your sd card wouldn't be more than 4 gigs, would it?
Nope - I stuck with 4GB so the TT sees all of it, and can format it itself - I understand that 8GB cards need formatting elsewhere and stuff installed elsewhere.
As I say, it works FINE...
UNTIL you hit a certain number of images - namely 24, or thus 30 in total between it and the internal memory.
Has anyone else managed to get more than 30 images in the Photos Folder?
Stick the photos on the Internal Memory, and it works fine, irrespective of how many.
But, delete the entire "photos" folder on the internal memory (so as to avoid confusing the device) and put them ONLY on the SD card, and it doesn't work - it's as if, when trying to read all the images, when you click the Photos button on the TomTom Menu, it takes too long, and having not managed to finish the task of displaying the thumbnails within a certain time, the TomTom reboots.
So it seems that it simply doesn't like many photos at all on the SD card.
Beggars the question, aside from music, if it doesn't like Photos on an SD card, what point to it, as my map is fine on internal.

What if you try putting a shortcut in the folder on the internal memory, which points to the SD card or replacing the "photos" folder with a "photos" shortcut pointing directly to the SD card? _________________ Andy

Er, I'm computer literate, but how would you mean I do this in terms of the TomTom seeing this, not a PC being able to do this.
I'm not actually sure what you mean, but sounds worth a try...

Just for testing, I put 158 on my card, plus the 6 TT photos, GO720, 8GB SDHC.
They all show up in the photo gallery and they work with slide show.
I haven't considered using any of them as splash screens of course, because they're jpegs.
EDIT Just for devilment I tried changing startup screen and selected one of them and it worked OK. Probably not a very good test, 2560 x 1920 and 987KB, but it seemed to cope and squidged it to fit. _________________ Dennis

What sort and Size of card, and what device do you have mate?
Read my signature, that's what it's for. Saves asking stupid questions.
Wasn't at all sure which card went with which device using which version of software, given how much your signature does cover. Still not sure reading it again even.
Never mind, I'm all out of stupid questions for the day **
Thanks Dennis. Not sure why mine is giving grief given it's a card meant to be reliable.
I have tried several times formatting it several ways - even using the Panasonic Tool meant to format SD cards the way 'nature intended', as well as standard Windows Formats, and "In Device" formats.
And ALL do the same thing - soon as I click on view photos on my TomTom, it pauses as if reading them, and then reboots after several seconds doing nothing.
Yet you and others have said that it works fine for you lot.
Only difference I can see is that my "photos" are all specifically sized jpegs ready to use as startups.
I am off to do one final test - that of filling the folder just with proper mixed photos of varying sizes, to see if this makes any difference.
Otherwise all I can think of is a duff card, or bad file names.

I know this will sound really obvious but you haven't mentioned it yet...
You have tried doing the 15sec pin reset and/or tried the clearflash tool (not exactly sure what this does personally as I haven't used it)?
It appears to fix other problems at random so may be worth giving it a shot. _________________ Gerry

That is to say, I tried it with an 8GB Class 6 SDHC and it worked fine for various tests, photos etc.
But being an 8GB card, it was necessary to use my Card Reader to format and copy over.
So suspecting this might be the key, I tried my original card, a 4GB Class 4 SDHC, but formatted using Card Reader, and files copied over that way.
AND IT WORKED!
So, despite the very long post already on here about how 4GB SDHC cards were the safest bet as up to this size, TomTom likes them and can be used IN the device for copying etc, whereas 8GB cards have to be used via a Card Reader, and THEN TomTom can access them...
...It seems instead, unless I have a duff card, that for photos, even with just a 4GB SDHC Card, TomTom specifically wants you to format the card in a card reader AND use only a card reader to add files.
It DOES NOT like it if you use the card whilst in the device, to add files.
Despite this as best I recall, being the common knowledge and view in the SD Card Compatibility thread, where cards not over 4GB were involved.
So just to repeat folks, even for only 4GB sized cards, you seem to be far better off using a Card Reader, and NOT via the device itself, when working with these cards - that is SDHC cards - standard SD might differ and work fine, but this is the mileage I have found where even 4GB cards are concerned if they are SDHC ones.
