|
|
I got my new Go 720 yesterday. It's WE map is version 705.1480. I have now downloaded version 715 with my new map guarantee 3 times and each time it won't install. After a few minutes it comes up with "Invalid archive: C\:Name\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\map\Map_of_Western_Europe_Western_Europe.zip.
Does anyone know why this should happen please? I didn't notice before bu this time "Western_Europe" is repeated. Could this possibly be the cause? _________________ TT Go Essential |

I just tried to extract the WE files from the zip folder. I didn't know if I could do that then just copy them into the device. But it only got a little way then said "error reading file". So maybe the zip folder is corrupted. If I haven't had any possible solutions I may try downloading the map for a 4th time overnight and, if it still doesn't work, I'll contact TomTom support to see it there are any ideas there _________________ TT Go Essential |

Delete the download from the PC and Home will download it again (for upto 12 months it will be made available). You have a corrupt download on your PC, try again for one that Home can open - Mike |

Thanks Mike, that's what I was planning to do tonight, but I was worried because this has happened 3 times now.
When you say to delete the download, I only have the "map" folder in the "Download" folder, so I take it it's ok to delete the whole folder.
Does the 12 months apply now that I have downloaded it once for free within my allotted 30 days?
I'll report back when I have tried downloading it for the 4th time. _________________ TT Go Essential |

Delete (or copy to somewhere else just in case) everything in the map folder and give it another go.

Thanks, I'll try it again overnight, otherwise it takes about 8 hours to download. The first time I did it, it also corrupted the original map on the device. Shows the value of an Explorer backup straight out of the box. I've now moved that one onto the SD card _________________ TT Go Essential |

No joy! Last night I deleted the map folder from my TomTom\Home\Downloads, which contained the Map_of_Western_Europe folder. I then downloaded the map again overnight and still got the error message that the Western_Europe.zip file was an invalid archive.
When I open the Map_of_Western_Europe folder after downloading, these files and folder are inside:
activation_map_50102.cab
map9133-1.gif
map9133.gif
Western_Europe.toc
Western_Europe.zip (Zipped folder)
Does that sound right?
If I open the zip folder there are 30 .dat files & Western_Europe.pna & Western_Europe-9.meta. If I click on "Extract all files" after 2 or 3 minutes it says "Error reading the file".
This has now happened 4 times, so it seems to me that I may be downloading a corrupt file. But I'm unaware of anyone else having the problem. I don't think it's possible to download the map without using Home so I'm going to email TomTom Support and see if I get any help there. But I have more faith that someone on the forum might know the answer. I'm off to France on Thursday and had hoped to have the latest map by then, at least I still have WE 7.05 that I can use if the update is not sorted by then.
Help anyone? _________________ TT Go Essential |

Your best bet is asking TT to assign it to your account or provide a url where you can download it from.
It is getting corrupted by something, have you another PC you could try downloading it on?

Thanks Andy, I'm still writing to TomTom so I'll ask them. I don't have another PC I could use, but have had no problem downloading anything else. Just this map. I even turned off my firewall & anti-virus last night while I was downloading but that made no difference at all. _________________ TT Go Essential |

You are not alone, others have had problems.
When I updated mine for my 920 it took a couple of hours but I have fast broadband, if it is taking 8 hours either the TT servers are overloaded or you are on a slower broadband.
No harm in trying again tonight as you won't get an answer out of TT until Monday anyway.

My Broadband is supposed to be 2 mb but I suspect it's running closer to 1mb. I wondered about uninstalling Home 2.2 & downloading it again. Would that be likely to help? _________________ TT Go Essential

Maybe, maybe not.
The problem is more likely to be a TT server one.
I have a 20 meg broadband connection and it took two hours - all I can say is good luck on 1 - 2 meg - maybe the TT servers time out your connection?
I would ask for it to be assigned to your account. FYI TT will want proof of purchase (scanned receipt), serial number and possibly device code depending how pedantic they are feeling. Probably best to raise a support case with all of this info in now and then they have no excuse not to deal with it on Monday.

Thanks Andy, I did attach a scanned copy of my receipt but I'll update it with the further info you suggest.

Lucky you. Only in the last month did we get upgraded here in Guernsey, supposedly to 2 meg, but my modem shows 1.1 but it always did even when we were on 1 meg so I don't think I can rely on that. It does sometimes seem slightly faster though. But that is why I've been choosing to download at night. I think then it "only" takes about 5 hours but I don't sit up & wait for it _________________ TT Go Essential |

I tried another latest map download last night and had a look at 3:30 this morning. Same result so I started another one that finished at 7:30am. Still the same and they both took almost exactly 4 hours which I didn't think was unreasonable for over 1.6 Gigs. I seem to remember my old navigator v 6.75 (I think) taking as long.
Now I've left it at home trying again.
I'd be interested to hear how long other people have taken to download the WE 715 map, and the speed of their broadband connection.
I found a web site that checks the broadband speed and the best it has come up with was 918 megs at 3.30am on my supposedely 2 meg connection.
Maybe TT support will come up with an answer . I have clicked on "Notify TomTom Anonymously" on all 7 attempts so far. _________________ TT Go Essential |

If I remember correctly, it was nearly 7 hours for one of my W+CE maps (v715, but the smaller one for 2GB machines). The bigger one (v7.10 full size) took about 5 1/2 hours. Both were successful on first attempt though.
That was on a supposed 4Meg connection. (Virgin/NTL)
I've helped a colleague download the WE for a 700 (which I think was about the same time and that took two attempts at about 5 hours on work's 2Meg connection.
I don't thingk the "report anonymously" button is going to do you much good, you need to get on the phone and start hassling. Be prepared for them to blame everything about YOUR setup though... telling you can download successfully from anywhere else on the web will fall on deaf ears! |
