Hello

I was reading somewhere that if I set the clock settings on my nuvi 760 on UTC (among the 3 options 12hr 24hr UTC) then it will automatically adjust the timezone settings to its current location. About a month ago I went for a week to Greece and I was expected to automatically set the clock to GMT+2 but nothing happened.

Am I missing something? or the UTC is something different?

Thanks in advance!

Hi TS

If everyone sets UTC as the basis for their GPS, at the same precise instant in time, no matter where you are in the world, your GPS will show the same time in UTC (GMT), and take no account of local time.

1200UTC Greece = 1200UTC Greenland = 1200UTC Grenada etc etc

The GPS satellites send the time in GMT/UTC (basically the same as each other but not quite - won't go into the technicalities).

GPS receivers have no knowledge of local time zones so you have to set it manually. Depending on how the software works, it may or may not be able to change to BST (as we are now) itself either.

I'm pretty sure mine corrected automatically.

Setting mine to UTC sets the time back one hour from now.

true, but the unit software itself can 'detect' a change in time zone and update accordingly. garmin announced this as a feature in some of their newer units at cebit last month

Since the GPS is able to find its location on the map, I can imagine that is not that hard to make a software to automatically select your timezone!
I wonder how the GPS manufactors missed this detail!

MaFt do you have any idea if this feature may be included on current Garmin models or is it for "new customers only" ?

The time setting in the 760 available to anyone in the UK is 'Western Europe.' I thought this was going to give me problems as the UK is generally 1 hour ahead of the rest of Western Europe, but the unit is displaying the correct time, so there must be something in the software that allows it to display the correct time based on it's current location.

I think they just rename it Western Europe to avoid to list all the cities with the same timezone e.g London, Lisbon etc

There is another option for Central Europe (CET) GMT+1 that includes France,Germany,Italy timezone and Eastern Europe (EET) GMT+2 that includes Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey etc...

so it looks its only manual timezone at the moment Rolling Eyes
