Hi

I would like to buy a top end sat nav for <£400

Main criteria:
1. Good maps which are updatable and reliable
2. Good POI / speed cameras which are accurate
3. connectivity to mobile phone

I recently bought a tomtom 720, which in the first instance I thought was fantastic. Turned out to be a complete pile of rubbish. Since promised functionality did not perform (notably the unit kept going mental and kept belting out a painfully loud siren noise which could not be shut down).

I would LOVE to buy another Go720 becuase it has amazing potential, but the sad reality is the current version is complete garbage. I would never waste good money again on such an appalingly executed product. Thank God I got my money back.

If there is a Garmin or other such product with equal functionality of the Go 720 but with good reliability I would gladly pay £400 for it.

Any advice is gratefully received.
Thanks Very Happy

I, personally, think you need to define what it is your are actually requiring?

TomTom are trying to reach the climatic pinnacle of SatNav, iPod & Handsfree convergence in one unit.

My 520 does all of the above reasonably well. Granted handsfree crashes sometimes - But I understand where and why this happens and have offered my comments to tomtom on that.

However if your serious about spending £400 notes on a unit I would, again personally, buy a fitted hands-free car cradle and a separate satnav.

I've had a few different one's and I have not found anything to be as good as TomTom's core application - SatNavigation.

Well. I would like to have the same as you, but for 200 quid.
Satnav in its present form is not so much Hitech as Lowtech !

OK, the connection to the Sats is Hitech, but the rest of the crap they put in the units, people wouldn't be seen dead with in a mobile phone.
The software is mostly 3rd rate even primitive.

No, the bottle of Ozy red has not clouded my thoughts, just genuine heartfelt belief.

I have a TT710, I have no intention of 'upgrading' - if that is the word - to anything new until the price comes down, the units have more 'bang 4 buck'.

PGPS is a good site by the way.

But please, don't go spending that sort of money - or even half - on the stuff available presently.
