A RUMOR:

Yesterday, a TomTom help line representative, based in the US, not in TomTom's European brain center, told me some bad news (at least in my view).

He said, TomTom will never again offer Navigator software in a retail box (with an enclosed CD) for customer installation. This means "Version 7."

Instead, TomTom will market all future cellphone/PDA based Navigator products only via the handset manufacturer. In other words, if you want TomTom, it has to be pre-installed on the device by the manufacturer.

Why did they do this? The rep told me that currently the huge number of problems with installs on unsupported devices was causing too much customer dissatisfaction and too much time spent for TomTom.

I'm shocked and disappointed if the RUMOR is true. But, I also can understand it.

Can anyone offer more firm insight?

I would imagine it has more to due with software piracy. By not making it available on CD will go a long way to preventing copies appearing on the newsgroups and torrent sites.

With the latest version 7 updating and installing new software and maps is now done via Home 2 making it more difficult and giving TomTom more control on what you install.

So those of us who have a slightly unusual (yet fully compatible) device will be prevented from using TomTom? Great! At least they aren't the only sat nav software house out there.

I don't know but with the V7 maps and software updating etc. is all done through Home 2. Also there is no registration code included as that is also handled by Home 2 it automatically logs you in to the TomTom site when you connect the device to the PC.

Since V7 is not available how can you know that?

I wouldn't get too worked up about this, it's pure speculation.

Well, not exactly "pure speculation", since a TomTom helpline guy told me this.

But it's a good point: it's only a rumor told to me by a guy a long way from the decision makers.

I'm nervous that it's true and I am very committed to TomTom!

The question is: can anyone out there more definitely confirm or deny?

If the US support guys are anything like the Amsterdam ones, much of what they say can be taken as complete rubbish!

I'm really don't want to get into a big fight over this!

I was just looking for independent confirmation (or not) and thought you guys might help.

No need to bash the messenger: he seemed quite knowledgable and sincere.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to bash the messenger. Perhaps I'm too cynical n my old age but it is not the first time rumours such as this have emanated from TT Support which have transpired to be baseless.

Because v7 is available albeit only on PNA/PNDs as yet.

Because I'm using it on my Go 720 and my quote was an explanation of how it works on that unit.

This is pure speculation, but it may well be the reason for the delay in releasing V7 for PDA's that they are trying to implement the same, rather than dish out Software on CD's that are easily copied, hacked and distributed for free across the net.

While it would be less convenient for me to use a standalone TT unit in the future as opposed to my all-in-one phone/pda/nav unit (HTC Apache), I would miss the functionality of "navigate to contact". I use that all the time, and have not seen the ability to import contacts into a "regular" Tom Tom unit.

The Go 720 has the ability to import your phone numbers from your mobile phone via it's bluetooth connection but they are only used to enable the Go to make phone calls and are not available via a menu option to navigate too.

Seems it's not a rumour any longer.

Based on this video from TomTom headquarters in Amsterdam, TomTom Navigator 7 (sold individually for Pocket PC) is dead.

Instead, they will offer it through HTC. I assume that means either preinstalled or "tuned" to a particular device, and sold via HTC, not all bad.

It's a very interesting video on High Definition Traffic by the way.
