My father's quite a keen walker and I'm looking into getting him a walkers Sat Nav system. I've seen lots of sat navs on the market but what I'd really like for him is one that records the route you are walking for future reference with (ideally) the option to download it to the PC. I don't just want the start and finish points but the turnings as you walk. Do any of them do this. Sorry but I'm a bit confused (it doesn't take much).

Thanks,

Susan

A good place to start would be here,

http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/uk/onthetrail

I have a Garmin etrex, no maps, very basic, or you can get them with maps, depends what you want, and you can save/download/upload onto a PC. There are other makes, but here is a good place to start looking.

Have to agree that Garmin are a good way to go. Another option is a PDA with Memory Map software, which has pros and cons (can do other stuff, but not robust and shorter battery life)

The options depend largely on your budget and the technical confidence of the user. I find a high level of Geek factor also helps with the PDA option.

The OS style maps on a device are so much better than those supplied with the Garmin device, it is the maps that let the Garmin down IMHO.

You could take a look at the SatMap active10 which is a ruggedised PNA device using OS maps, or as robertn has mentioned Memory Map running on a PDA which will be a cheaper option to start with.

To save breaking the PDA get an "Otter Box" to put it in, this will keep it dry and saves the unit from being dropped etc - Mike
