Charging a Nuvi 300T

Am I correct in thinking that my Nuvi 300T doesn't charge its internal battery when plugged into the car via the base mount connection and with the traffic aerial thing plugged into the side? After using it like this, yesterday I thought I'd try it on batteries in a different car, only to find it ran out of juice within about a minute. Having charged it overnight via the usb lead, it seems fine.

Also, I have a Mototola cellphone which came with a charger with a mini usb plug. Does anyone know if this will be OK to use to charge the Garmin?

I reckon it *should* charge. However:

One thing I've found, is that if you connect a charger that cannot supply sufficient current, then my 310 tends to just say "Battery Charging Complete" - rather than saying 'charging not even attempted!'. You can see some more details on the Battery Diagnostics Page (hold Time and then press 'next' 4 or 5 times).

The rear connector on the cradle may have a 'mini-usb type' socket, but it initially draws up to 800mA from this connector - which USB (and similarly rated chargers) cannot supply.

It draws a lot less current when charging from the side USB connector (and thus takes a lot longer).
