newbie help required

hi all, i have just acquired a gps, a garmin legend hcx, what i need now to know is how to find an OS map of denbighshire , shropshire and cheshire, also how to go about putting it onto the gps itself.
sorry but this is all new to me.
i need mapping for short walks over country side and for logging positions in fields.
any help appreciated.

The Legend will not accept OS maps. You may be lucky enough to find a free download of your area, but it will not have OS detail. The only realistic solutions you have are a) buy the Garmin TopoGB maps, which give detailed contours, major and minor roads, most lanes, some (but not all) footpaths and some other geographical features e.g. lakes, but not field/wall boundaries; b) access the SMC contour only maps downloadable from the SMC website; c) buy MemoryMap or Anquet digital OS mapping software and use them to create a route for transfer to the Garmin.

The TopoGB maps will fit on a 2Gb microSD card and leave plenty of room for routes and tracks. None of the options will give you full OS detail to carry with you - but then you should always carry paper map and compass anyway.
