Hi I have just brought a Nav U83 and was wondering if it is possible to use custom POI's from this site and also can you use the pocketgps world camera database?

I have only used the unit for a couple of short journeys today and so far I am quite impressed. I have been a Pda user for many years and decided to sell my setup after buying my wife a Go 520 which I thought was great. I was going to get a Go 520 as well but I thought I would give the Sony a unit a try first.

I have used Navigon 6 on my Pda but it was horribly slow, it runs really well on the Sony unit though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Richard

I think the Sony only supports POIs supplied in Sony's custom encrypted format?

Hi Darren,

Do you know if POI-Warner can be used with the Sony? I looked on their website and the older models are supported or is anyone reading this using POI-Warner with one of these.

I have 14 days to decide if I am going to keep the Sony so all is not lost if I do decide to change it.

You may have read in another post that I am moving to Canada in the summer so I am going to call Sony today and find out if I can get upgrade and ge the cnadaian maps. On Sony anada's website they are listing the Nav-U83 as being available early Feb so I hope new maps will be availiable. I had a look at the device through my PC and the map of the UK has a .map extension which is the same as the maps for Navigon 6.

Cheers Richard

No it can't, earlier Sony models used Navigon, the latest ones use Sony's own software.

I thought I would give you an update, After eventually getting in contact with Sony technical support (Which I have to say is a complete joke) it looks like I cannot upgrade the maps on this unit which is a real shame as I actually quite like it. The screen is superb and the voice instructions are absolutley spot on. As a navigation device it works very well without the other bells and whistles. I.e Mp3 player etc. I do not need this function anyway as I have an 80GB Ipod.

I certainly never noticed any problems with the reaction time of the buttons either which some reviews mentioned and the unit seemed very responsive.

Looks like it will be going back this weekend in favour for a good old TomTom Go 520.
