Anyone know of any GPS units on the market that have the ability to use a custom route created on a PC other than the usual top end Garmin and TT units (Zumo Rider etc)? Not too worried if the unit is not waterproof as I have been using a Garmin i3 for many years and not had a problem to date.

Just need to be able to create a custom route, without spending a fortune.

I have been looking at the ViaMichelin products and although they don't seem to have custom route creation, they do have useful route preferrences that make them suitable for use on a Bike. Anyone using one?

Cheers

Paul

In all honesty if you want full route planning on a budget then you're probably better off buying a used older Garmin such as a Quest.

Like you I used an i3 but got frustrated with it's simple A-B (via C at most) routing. About 18 months ago I got a Quest off eBay for £130, the Garmin bike mounting kit new for another £50 and some RAM bits for another £20 odd. Haven't looked back since. Was thinking of going for a Rider (Mk1) before that but am now glad I didn't after all the reported issues.

You can get Quests from eBay for less than £100 now and if you're lucky get one with all the bike mounting hardware for around £150. Just make sure that it comes with the unlock code and relatively current mapping.

Quest lacks pseudo 3D, proximity alerts (scamera warnings), Bluetooth and MP3 but is still a very capable GPS unit.
