Hello

Does anyone know why the size of the maps for the US for the Tom Tom is different for the 520 than the 720?

for the 520 the download is 934mb and for the 720 its 1740mb

What extra do you get?

They both say that they have 99% street name coverage

Thanks
Craig

Perhaps lots more POIs?

Also they may have additional 'features' on the720 maps - e.g. lakes/parks/rivers/forests. TT have been known to remove these to keep the map size down. They aren't strictly required for navigation.

Thanks Phil.
I think I will buy a 4GB SD card as they are pretty cheap and throw the maps on that.
Appreciate your help.

So do you think I coudl buy the maps for the 720 and not the 520 - would they still work?

Yes, people have been doing this with the Western Europe vs Western and Central Europe maps for quite a while, just make sure you get a card with a high speed read/ write capability - Mike

This gets asked an awful lot, unfortunately it's never been made a "sticky" topic on this forum.

Go for a known brand like Kingston or Sandisk, avoid cheap deals on eBay etc like the plague, and be suspicious of anything that seems TOO cheap even if it says it's a known brand, as there are a LOT of fakes out there.

I think most decent cards will be fast enough now (it was more important to know an exact figure a few years ago when the technology was younger).

In a 520/720/920 you can use 4GB (or larger) cards using "SDHC" technology, on older machines you can't.

Here's one of the previous discussions:
SD Card speed

And here are TomTom's own recommendations:

http://www.tomtom.com/support/product.php?ID=1682&Language=1&query=memory+card&FID=2634
(notice they are typically vague about minimum card speed! Rolling Eyes )
