If I add a favourite and I don't like the route and change it, can I save the new route so when I use it again, this route is the one given - my real favourite.
I am using a GO 720 |

Adding a point as a favourite is only marking the point itself, not the route. For one route I take, I've added a POI on a road along it then chose to "navigate via" that point after the original route was calculated. That forces MY route to be chosen.
Have you tried the recommended route? Sometimes it's a surprise that it found a better route than the one you know. _________________ Gerry

Cheers Gerry, have tried both routes, its more or less across country, my preference, or TT's down the motorway, round the M25, up another motorway, (google & via michelin's prefered as well !) both take much the same time, one is boring. Do not want to change global settings, so I have to play with POI's then. |

It doesn't HAVE to be a POI, it could be another favourite, or you can just poke the map where you want to go "via". It's all accessed on the "Find alternative / Travel via..." menu. |

Cheers Andy, I was hoping for a way of saving "my favourite" as a one click solution, even looked in the root files for a fav folder to try and edit - no way. Now that would be a nice addition for me - listening Tom. |

If you mean "my Favourite ROUTE", then I'm afraid that is just not the way TomToms work (or any other satnav I know of).
All the favourites, or POIs, or any other destination are just a single point on the map, and the route is always worked out dynamically when you ask it to calculate it. The unit uses a set of very simple rules (shortest, fastest, etc) between those two points, and that's it.
If you want the Go to follow a specific route, you have to make and save an itinerary. Even then, it is still just a list of points and the Go will follow its own prefered route between each point.
Incidentally, your Favourites are stored in a file called "MapSettings.cfg" in the map folder, but the file also includes your Home location and your POI warning settings amongst other things and is an encrypted file that isn't very easy to edit.
Your POIs are stored in ".ov2" files that can be edited by utilities such as "POI Edit" (http://www.poiedit.com/) |

Garmin Streetpilot models let you plan a route on your computer and then transfer it to device. Route plan is also possible on device but hard work.
You then run your route so it takes you the way you want.

You can do the same thing with TomTom if you use the 3rd pary tool TYRE on your PC. An excellent program that lets use use Google Maps to create your routes. When you're finished you simply export it to itn format and put on your TomTom unit. A whole lot easier than editing the itinerary on your TT GO. One important thing to keep in mind is that the routing engine in Google Maps may differ from the one in your TomTom unit. After exporting the itn file to your TomTom unit, you should therefore review the route on the unit. If TomTom choses a route that differs from the one you planned in TYRE, you may have to add an additional via point to your itinerary to force TomTom into using the desired route.

Any chance of a link to get TYRE a Google search just sends back loads of online tyre sales! |

In some ways the following site appears allow more flexibility in placing destinations directly on the google maps, including SEARCHING for destinations (unless Tyre has a feature that I've missed).
http://houghi.org/tomtom/
You go to google maps, outline your itinerary and then grab the url and place it into the site listed above. You may have to zoom in to find just the right point on the map to place a "thumbtack"
I saw yet another site that functions similarly but can't find the link right now.
As mentioned about Tyre, remember it is only a series of points and the device will do its own routing between those points so the more points the more likely it will follow your choices ultimately. But in the field, there may still be variations. |

Thanks but not that one....
This one.....

I hope some of these sites stick around - they can be pretty helpful.
I recall attempting to get my handhelp Garmin 76CS to route me to the Sierra the way I wanted to go. I planned the route, created one, created a ton of waypoints, etc. But that was not how they worked. They routed you by their computational skills. The route uses some smaller, more direct highways but with some highway number changes and intersections in the middle of nowhere. So having to worry about looking at a map was a pain. The ITINERARY idea is a good one. You just have to make sure you have enough points to pretty much force it on your chosen route. |

hi, thanks for the URL's, am running Tyre with Google earth, as I used to plan routes in Google maps & print out this is a natural step. This seems to give me just what I want, using 6 waypoints gets me across country on "my route"
Waymarks placed on Google, start to finish, using calculate shows route, additional waypoints can be added to stop TT taking unwanted diversions, the itinerary is then saved and can be copied to the TT at the click of a button, then off we go. |
