I was planning a trip to La Coupole in France, and ran my 720 in demo mode to check the route, but it re-sets as soon as it hits France. If I try it in demo mode going the other way, from France to the UK, it re-starts as soon as I reach England!
Is this just my unit, or do I need customs clearance?

As a guess because the Chunnel isn't a routable area the demo will stop. You'd normally switch the unit off whilst in the Chunnel anyway as you'll get no signal and then be expected to switch on once out.
It's possible you'll have to manually set the second leg once you switch on again although it may automatically recalculate once it has a satellite fix. |

I'm a bit suprised, as it's possible to follow the entire route by browsing the map.
I would have expected it to stop if I'd chosen a ferry route, but the fact that you can follow the demo from either France or Folkestone to the other side of the channel seems to indicate that the unit can navigate either border OK.
I did notice the demo is faster from the French side, though, and appears to slow when the English side is reached. Rather weird behaviour for a "seamless" map?
I guess I'll only find out when I go for real...

Does the demo on the TomTom only last for 30 minutes (or some other fixed time / distance) anyway? perhaps it coincides with the Chunnel entrance? |

Demo only covers about 50 miles. It's for showing the machine in shop windows, not for real use..... _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

I did a search of the forum, which would appear to confirm that the demo only covers 80 miles or so - but I live about 17 miles from the Channel Tunnel terminal, and the route makes it just over 40 miles to the French end of the Tunnel.

Right, after a few more tests I've come to the conclusion that the Demo mode must be done on time. If I pick a start point just outside the Folkestone terminal of the tunnel, and a destination on the other side of the Sangatte end, the 720 will demo the route seamlessly through the tunnel and out to the destination.
I bet you all really wanted to know that....

Yeah, why not? Someone else might ask the same question. At least you came and told us the answer. Thanks. Have a good trip. |

The time length or distance of the demo version is something ive been trying to determine since i got my TT700 2 years ago and still having inconclusive results.
I do actually find it very useful, if for example your directing (a co-pilot) in a car the way home, by using the A to B planning then demo it at 90% speed you generally simultaniously go together.
It is also good to see a trip run, get a feel of what its like before you take the wheel, and if anything else its good fun playing with areas you would like to visit, and have a virtual drive around.
I would love to see the demo version have no end, only until journey is completed.

I thought that that WAS what it did, and when it re-set on longer routes I thought it was a glitch! Why have a demo option for a route when it can't play it all? Unless, as has been mentioned, it's just for shops to show you how it looks...

That's what I've always heard it was really for originally. |
