I don't know if it's relevant in this case but if you don't follow the link to the topic every time you receive the email (possibly visiting it also works), you won't get further alerts when a new post is added.

I suspect unwatching/watching it would reset that but a new email won't occur now until the next update.

Just in case, keep an eye on the homepage which also gets updated with a news story.
