There is the option in the new software version to display the 'compass' as well as showing the 'direction' in the display - effectively showing the same information twice...

It would be possible, instead of repeating this to have an altimeter in the display instead (or at least as an option). Presumably this is easily possible as the triangulation of the reception position from the satellites also must give the height of the position as well...?

Would this be a good idea? - do TomTom implement suggestions?!

Technically it is quite possible for TomTom to display altitude and the GPS receiver part of the TomTom DOES report the altitude though for some reason they choose not to display it to the user.

Many (most?) Garmin units will display an altitude.

The accuracy is about 1.5x worse than your lat/lon accuracy. So if your position was accurate to within 10 meters then your altitude would be within about 15 meters. The only catch is that you need 4 satellites to get an accurate altitude rather than just 3 for lat/lon.
