The custom voices have been around for quite a while on some of the other navigation software, at long last the same can be applied to the Route 66 software. I should stress this is not new and it would appear some European users of Route 66 have been doing this for some time.

Firstly let’s have a look at the voice files for spoken navigation commands, these are stored in the “speech” folder on the memory card, the file “british.db” contains the audio files used to make up the English (UK) voice pack.

The actual file comprises of 75 individual Ogg Vorbis audio files, these can be “swapped” out with other Ogg files using a PC based utility called “Spracheditor” which can be downloaded from This Page.

The software is easy to use and allows you to load a Route 66 speech file then swap the individual components for Ogg audio files with the same spoken meaning but using a different voice.

Each of the Ogg files that are contained in the speech file have a specific wording and sound as follows:

R66AN_1 “Welcome to Route 66”
R66AN_2 “An error has occurred”
R66AN_3 “Your route is being calculated”
R66AN_4 “Your route has been calculated”
R66AN_5 “You have reached your destination”
R66AN_6 “You have reached your intermediate destination”
R66AN_7 “You have reached your destination”
R66AN_8 “Your destination cannot be reached directly”
R66AN_9 “Your destination is located on a street with restricted access”
R66AN_10 “Your route is being updated”
R66AN_11 “Your route has been updated”
R66AN_12 “Because of the traffic situation your route has been recalculated”
R66AN_13 “You are entering a non fully coded area, and you may receive wrong driving instructions”
R66AN_14 “Ping/ Pong” (sounds like Polite 2 on TomTom)
R66CON_1 “Then”
R66CON_2 “And then”
R66CON_3 “Then immediately”
R66CON_4 “Now”
R66CON_5 “Ahead”
R66CON_6 “Please”
R66CON_7 “Follow the course of the road”
R66CON_8 “Follow the course of the road until further instructions”
R66CON_9 “At the second road”
R66CON_10 “At the third road”
R66MAN_1 “Turn around when possible”
R66MAN_2 “Make a U turn”
R66MAN_3 “At the roundabout”
R66MAN_4 “Leave the motorway”
R66MAN_5 “Change the motorway”
R66EX_1 “Take the exit”
R66EX_2 “Take the first exit”
R66EX_3 “Take the second exit”
R66EX_4 “Take the third exit”
R66EX_5 “Take the fourth exit”
R66EX_6 “Take the fifth exit”
R66EX_7 “Take the sixth exit”
R66EX_8 “Take the seventh exit”
R66NUM_50 “After fifty”
R66NUM_100 “After one hundred”
R66NUM_150 “After one hundred and fifty”
R66NUM_200 “After two hundred”
R66NUM_250 “After two hundred and fifty”
R66NUM_300 “After three hundred”
R66NUM_400 “After four hundred”
R66NUM_500 “After five hundred”
R66NUM_600 “After six hundred”
R66NUM_700 “After seven hundred”
R66NUM_800 “After eight hundred”
R66NUM_900 “After nine hundred”
R66NUM_1_MI “After one mile”
R66NUM_1_KM “After one kilometre”
R66NUM_2 “After two”
R66NUM_3 “After three”
R66NUM_4 “After four”
T66NUM_5 “After five”
R66UN_1 “Meters”
R66UN_2 “Kilometers”
R66UN_3 “Yards”
R66UN_4 “Miles”
R66UN_5 “Feet”
R66TU_1 “Go straight ahead”
R66TU_2 “Bear right”
R66TU_3 “Bear left”
R66TU_4 “Turn sharply right”
R66TU_5 “Turn sharply left”
R66TU_6 “Turn slightly right”
R66TU_7 “Turn slightly left”
R66TU_8 “Turn right”
R66TU_9 “Turn left”
R66TU_10 “Stay on right lane”
R66TU_11 “Stay on left lane”
R66TU_12 “Go right then immediately left”
R66TU_13 “Go left then immediately right”
R66TU_14 “Take the ferry”
R66TU_15 “Take the train”

You can create the Ogg files by using Audacity to record the sounds to the PC, the sample frequency should be set to 22050Hz. Each sound needs to be saved as its own file, the R66 line name in the above list corresponds to the individual file names when using the Spracheditor software.

With the modified voice file on the device you should be able to hear the new spoken commands while navigating, please note to keep the menu text the same you will have to alter the speech file that corresponds to your country. This is because the menu text and other on screen text messages are contained in a corresponding Language file stored in the “lang” folder.

It is not possible to alter the audio files of one of the other files without messing up the device menus.

For UK or English speaking counties you can modify the American voice file, then when you select the USA option your new voice files will be used and the menu / on screen text prompts will be OK.

For non UK speaking countries you will have to modify the speech file that corresponds to your country, save the original voice file to the PC before you swap the files out. - Mike
