I started this thread in a different section but was told this is the best place to look for answers.
Has anyone compared the CoPilot and TomTom side by side? I currently have the CoPilot and love how the directions are so clear and written out with detail but the maps just don't look very nice. Screenshots of the TomTom show that the maps definitely look a lot better but it lacks in detailed turn instructions. Has anyone tried both and have any comments on the subject? |

You got the main difference worked out pretty nicely. CoPilot is a "no BS" application. It demands discipline from the user, and eliminates "nice" features in favour of needed features.
CoPilot is a Route Planner (even with route optimization) that also allows to navigate
Copilot uses TTS. Awkward voice but plenty of details.
TomTom is more eye candy. Much more. Whoever created the TomTom UI certainly did their homework on usability and GUI design, specifically for the small PDA screen and for big fingers.
TomTom is excellent at navigating, and pretty weak at route planning.
TomTom uses WAV files. Better voice quality, less details (no street names)
So tell me what program you like and I tell you how much of a gameboy you are ;-) _________________ Lutz

So will the TomTom still get you door-door just as fast and efficiently as the CoPilot?
Does the TomTom give written out directions like the CoPilot? |

TomTom's directions in navigation mode include the street name and a directional pictogram, but do not put the manoeuvre in a complete sentence like CoPilot does. Street names in TomTom are shown in much smaller font, and the eye is resting more on the pictogram.
Getting you door-to-door is not a problem (although there is a twist - all these programs do only estimate the target house number, some better, some worse. NavTech data tends to be more accurate. For example, TomTom will not tell you which side of the street your house number is on. CoPilot will. _________________ Lutz
