Apologies if this has already been noted, but I've been away a lot and although I've caught up with most forums, I'm still pages behind on this one...

But if not, just a note to all the regulars...

When dealing with the TomTom 100 user POI category limit, we have been advising people to count the number of .ov2 files in the map folder to work out how many user POI categories are installed.

I've just discovered that downloading mapshare updates adds loads of new files called "CAxxxx.ov2" (and possibly "PAxxxx.ov2" from other updates) into the map folder.

I'm ASSUMING these don't count towards the 100 user POIs, but presumably it means we have to modify our advice, to ignore these in the count.

Off again 'til Sunday now...

Someone mentioned, somewhere, that there are only 60 POIs in V7 now.

If you install all the Pocketgpsworld speed related files for both the UK and Europe and include the PMobile for each you will have 68 .ov2 files, so if the limit is 60 were over the top already.

I'm so bored at work, I'm going to strip off all my user POIs, then start adding: 001.ov2, 02.ov2, 003.ov2 etc.
Wish me luck!

OK... I think I've got some VERY bad news Shocked

Bear with me and read this slowly...

I did exactly what I said I would. I removed all of my custom POI categories and started creating new ones, one by one, on the machine (using change preferences/manage POIs/add POI category). I called them 001, 002, 003 etc.

When I got to 075, I stopped to have a look and, ALREADY lots were not showing up! I could only see 001-047.

Next I looked at the contents of my map folder with Windows Explorer. Now, as mentioned above, I have done a little bit of Mapshare. This has put loads of files with either CAxxxx.ov2 or PAxxxx.ov2 names in the map folder.
In fact I already had 54 CAxxxx files and 2 PAxxxx files.

So I tried temporarily deleting all of those. Suddenly the rest of my POI categories up to 075 re-appeared. So I then carried on adding categories (up to 101).
Now, when I looked, I could see 100 of my categories (in fact number 049 was the one that went missing).

SO - it seems that the number of user POI categories allowed is still 100.
BUT the Mapshare CAxxxx files DO count towards the total!

Next I added just 50 of the CAxxxx.ov2 files back. Now I was allowed access to 50 of my POIs (001-048 plus 059 and 060). That seemed to confirm my findings
Then I added the 2 PAxxxx.ov2 files, and suprisingly there was no change...
So did the PA files not count?
Next, I removed everything to start afresh, and added ALL 56 CA and PA files and 60 POI files, but this time I STILL had access to 50 POI categories (but a different mix: 001-046 plus 057-060).
So now I'm thinking, if it ignores ANY files over the 100 limit, is it now ignoring some of the Mapshare corrections instead of the POIs? And how could I ever tell?

Now, I've only been using Mapshare for a few days, and already I've collected 56 of these files. Are there going to be more added every time it downloads some corrections? And will that mean an ever-shrinking space for user POIs?

Does this spell the end of the speed-zoned database?

I could raise a question with TomTom, but if what I've uncovered is this fer-reaching, is there anyone at PGPSW who can ask the relevant questions in a more direct way, and hopefully get a better answer than me struggling with customer services?

A very interesting observation Andy, I doubt it will spell the end of the speed camera database in speed zoned format though! People will vote with their feet, I for one very seldom connect to TomTom Home with my main device as I don't trust it at all.

More likely is that users will bin Map Share unless it can work without producing undesirable side effects such as you have found, it shouldn't be rocket science to put map share data in a different folder and still get the device to use it correctly if it does indeed mess up the Custom POI files, this will require further programe releases though.

You must have been very very bored to try that lot out though Laughing - Mike

The top end is still 100 so long as you don't have any Mapshare files getting in the way.

I have also noticed this problem Andy_P2002.
I have asked TT Support about it, no reply so far...

I did this to see what was going on:
- Deleted all on my Go720
- Restored with backup from day-0
- In TT Home v2, I set only mapshare updates verified by Tomtom and my own updates
- I ticked off all the original POI's, I didnt want any updates on those.

Then, docked the unit, got a couple of map updates, but none POI updates.
Over to explorer, and no CAxxxx or PAxxxx files to be found.
So it seems like map updates doesnt generate any files, but POI updates do.

Ok, thats it for me, no POI updates from Tomtom, they arent that good anyway...

Very interesting!!

Has anyone inspected the contents of the CA & PA OV2 files? Are they standard OV2s? Can they be combined into single files?

These files cannot be opened in POI-Edit.
I dont know if they can be combined...
