Help please - i3 map upgrade City Navigator NT Europe v9.02

My i3 was a later model with the maps factory pre-installed on the internal memory. I do not have a separate memory card. I have just bought an unlock code for v9 maps but I cannot load the maps to my i3. Get error message saying memory card is missing. Is it possible to upgrade the pre-installed maps? Do I have to buy a memory card to use with the upgraded maps.

Can anyone help please.
